Finding just the right gift for parents and parent-in-laws can be some of the most difficult Christmas shopping. In many cases, it seems that parents really have everything that they want or need. While it can make things a bit easier if they've provided a Christmas list, when that luxury isn't available, it means that creative measures must be taken to come up with what seems like the perfect Christmas gift for mom and dad. Here are a few suggestions that may make shopping less stressful and a bit more fun:

An updated family photo
Parents often like getting a current family photo that includes not only their child and that child's spouse but also includes the grandkids. In this digital age, this doesn't have to mean going to a portrait studio. It can be as simple as gathering everyone around the tree and having a friend of the family take the picture, or using the timer mechanism on a person's digital device. Many big box stores have a photo center where pictures on a digital device can be developed in the store as an 8x10 in an hour or so. That plus putting the photo in a nice frame can be a very appreciated gift that makes for a very special memory for years to come.

Homemade goodies
For those who like to bake and can actually find the time to do it, getting something homemade in this day and age can be a real treat, even if it's for mom and dad. Homemade cookies, jams, candies, bread, and even something as unique as a homemade salsa with some chips can be items that make figuring out a fun Christmas gift meaningful for both the person making the gift and mom and dad.

Homemade craft items
Some people would rather sew than bake. Or maybe knitting or crocheting a scarf or hat is an option. For those who don't have those skills, there are craft stores such as Hobby Lobby or Michael's where a person can buy kits to make a special Christmas ornament, Christmas wreath,  a beautiful piece of jewelry, or perhaps a personalized tee-shirt with fun and memorable saying or a cute applique design.

Scented candles
Some people really enjoy the smells of the season or other particular scents such as roses, lavender, honeysuckle, vanilla, or cinnamon. So a scented candle can be the perfect gift if the shopper happens to know what types of scents mom and dad especially enjoy. Speaking of candles, a couple of dinner candles, elegant candle holders, a box of chocolates can be an enjoyable gift with a romantic flair.

Movie tickets
Most people like movies, but don't necessarily want to pay to go into a theater. This can be a fun gift because it allows mom and dad to choose their favorite genre and makes for a really easy purchase for the shopper right at the theater. If the value of two tickets along with maybe some popcorn and drinks are purchased, it can make for a special date night for mom and dad from the kids.

Matching Umbrellas

A pretty rare gift in general, and one with a cute but practical flair. Plus, they are easy to find at this time of the year. If the shopper happens to know the favorite colors of mom and dad, this can be a nice touch, maybe with a hat and gloves set.

Favorite destination
If mom and dad like road trips or getting out and traveling together, tickets for a special place such as a trip to Israel, The Holy Land Experience, Sight and Sound Theater, or tickets for a cruise are an extravagant gift idea that maybe the whole family can chip in on and make for a special adventure for mom and dad that they talk about for years to come.
