Since Google announced their upgrade to their own personal operating system, Android, to version 6.0 (also known as Android M or Marshmallow), it has begun its slow rollout to newer (less than two years old) Android devices. Also part of the tradition is that the newest version comes to Google's Nexus series, and some have been receiving Android 6.0.1. The good news is that the HTC One M9 and the One M8 are supposed to be receiving their update before this year ends, or "the beginning end of 2015". Considering that the year is almost over, they should probably get on that.
Fortunately, for HTC users, the good news is that HTC operates on a 90-day promise for updates, provided that the device is less than two years old, according to Pocket-Lint. That is bad news for those that have the HTC One M7, which won't be receiving this update.
A recent update on Twitter from Mo Versi, HTC's Vice President of Product Management, revealed on December 7 that "M9 unlocked Marshmallow OS update and A9 6.0.1 (with updated emoji) is on target for this month". Versi has practically become the official spokesperson for Android updates when it comes to HTC devices.
The 90-day promise is more of a target, and HTC has missed that deadline in the past. Also, the update could be dependent on the United States carrier like Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, US Cellular, or AT&T. There have been instances when one carrier's subscribers will receive it earlier than another one. Readers should note that the tweet from Mo Versi only mentions the unlocked M9, and doesn't mention carriers.

As for the HTC One A9, users of this device should have it already, out of the box. It was one of the first devices besides the Google Nexus series to receive it. The fact that it will be receiving version 6.0.1, the next small step up, should also be pleasing to HTC One A9 users.
Again, there aren't set release dates for when Android 6.0 is going to come to these phones, so users are encouraged to check their "Settings" menu to see if there is an OTA (Over the Air) update available.
