Windows 10 Update.
Another Update for Windows 10. NeoWin/Microsoft

When Microsoft made Window 10 free for downloading, this was a great solution for users but created more problems for Microsoft as there has had to be constant updates readily available. The latest (at this writing) is the Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511, and here is the latest news as well as how to install with fixes and bugs.

For those that want to install the update, there are several options.  However, Microsoft wants you to know that if you install a language pack after you install this update, you must reinstall the update. So Microsoft recommends that you, the user, install any language packs that are needed before the update is installed.  There is more information on how to add the language packs to Windows here.

There is also another known issue in this update as customers running Windows 10 or Windows 10 Version 1511 who have Citrix XenDesktop installed will not be offered the update.  There is a Citrix issue with the XenDesktop software, so users who install the update will be prevented from logging on.  Microsoft recommends uninstalling the incompatible software and installing this update to stay protected.  Also, customers should contact Citrix for more information and help with this XenDesktop software issue.

One option of installation is just accept the Windows update, where it will be downloaded and installed automatically.  Another option is to go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website for a stand-alone package of this update.

According to the Microsoft Support website, the security update for Windows 10 Version 1511 includes improvements in the functionality of Windows 10 Version 1511 and resolves the following vulnerabilities in Windows:

  • 3124605 MS16-008: Security update for Windows kernel to address elevation of privilege: January 12, 2016
  • 3124901 MS16-007: Security Update for Windows to address remote code execution: January 12, 2016
  • 3124584 MS16-005: Security Update for Windows kernel-mode drivers to address remote code execution: January 12, 2016
  • 3124275 MS16-001: Security update for Internet Explorer: January 12, 2016
  • 3118753 Microsoft security advisory: Updates for ActiveX kill bits

These Windows 10 updates are cumulative, which means that the package contains all previously released fixes.  Should there be any previous updates, then only the new fixes that are contained in the package will be downloaded and installed on the computer.

For those that want to get this now, just use one of the two options listed above. There are no prerequisites for installing this update, and you will have to restart the computer after you apply this update.   Also, this update replaces the previously released update known as 3124200, which was made live on December 17, 2015.  The new Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 came out on January 12, 2016.
