Even though we live in a superhero age of film-making, audiences still wanted to see another take with Deadpool, Marvel's Merc with a Mouth, finally brought to life better again by Ryan Reynolds, who first portrayed the character in the not well-received X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Audiences not only paid to see it, but kept coming back, which means that a sequel is on its way. This is everything that is known about Deadpool 2 with its release date and introduction of other characters such as Cable.
In fact, The Verge reported that a Deadpool 2 has already been green-lit, and this was just as the first Deadpool movie was in theaters. Director Tim Miller is already at work on a script from the original writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.
Apparently, the next Deadpool movie is going to feature Cable, a time-travelling mutant who became a fan-favorite back in the early nineties. Director Tim Miller talked about casting the character at Silicon Valley Comic Con, but wasn't about to reveal if he had any particular names in mind. In addition to Cable, there could be more comic book source material poured into the sequel as Cable's own team, X-Force, could also be making an appearance.
So far, it looks like Ryan Reynolds is the only character set to come back for the sequel. This is not to say that he couldn't do a whole film by himself with his fourth-wall breaking narration, but there has to be more.
However, there doesn't really need to be any more. Miller has also stated that he doesn't want the sequel to Deadpool to be bigger. That is, he doesn't want to invest a hundred million dollars in effects and an "epic" storyline simply because he can. He believes that the original film worked due to the humor, action, and heart of its protagonist, and wants to bring the now iconic character back again.
This is a pretty wise decision from the director, as more explosions and special effects could take away from what is already a good human story. Considering that a lot of movies or TV shows based on comic book source material tend to become crowded (like Daredevil Season 2), it would be good if Deadpool 2 keep its proper focus on Wade Wilson (Deadpool's real name).
Right now, there has been no official release date for Deadpool 2 that has been announced. Even the film's imdb page reveals it for 2017, which is quite soon. It should be noted that there is no plan to have Deadpool in the next X-men Apocalypse film, in spite of the story taking place in the same universe. Another popular X-man film based on Gambit (starring Channing Tatum) is set to be released next year as well. However, with the last Wolverine film on the way, will fans get to see Deadpool and Wolverine locked in combat on the silver screen at last?
