It was originally announced at the Game Awards in December that the new Tron game, otherwise known as Run/r, would have a PC-only release. However, there is now news that it will be coming to the PS4 and Xbox. This is what is known about Disney's Tron Run/r Game Release Date, News, Reviews, and the Coming of Tron 3.
According to CNET, Tron Run/r allows the player to create their own avatar and then to customize it with many elements that include "light cycles, suits, and helmets." There are about 30 levels to "zip through", and there is a "Steam" mode to challenge players to make their way through remixes of existing levels. The game also has leaderboards so that the players can challenge their friends to the top scores.
The Tron Run/r game is currently available on Steam now for Early Access, with reviews being Very Positive. This is the Steam description: "Kevin Flynn...he is a legend. Space Paranoids, TRON the whole deal. The man came up with so many ideas. The world needs to see them. See what they tried to hide. So much unseen for so long. Here it is. The truth. RUN PROGRAM! More to come."
Chris Nicholls, Disney's product development director, has said that the company's goal was to make sure that it "remained authentic" to Tron's arcade origins. For those that aren't aware, Tron was a 1982 Disney film about a man named Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) who has his essence put into a computer, and forced to play games to survive. The film was inspired by the video game craze of that time and spawned its own arcade game based on events in the movie.
The 1982 film is a cult classic, and it eventually led to a sequel with Tron Legacy in 2010. The film was an update to the original universe, and it is a franchise that Disney kept alive with an animated series known as Tron: Uprising. In fact, Disney is working on a third Tron movie, which has no official title as yet. The IMDB page has very little information on it except a tagline of "When an old enemy returns, the game changes".
It is interesting that Disney wants to keep this franchise alive, as Tron Legacy was not well-received, but Tron: Uprising was able to get a cult following. Clearly there is an audience for Tron movies and games, even if it is only a niche one.
If you are part of that audience that loves all things Tron, then you should know that Tron Run/r will be launching on February 16th on all platforms (PC, Xbox One, and PS4) for $20.
