Seeing China’s rapid economic development and the essential role that she plays in the international stage, overseas Chinese can’t help but be ambivalent? On one hand, they hope for their motherland’s good in hope to return and join in on making money; at the same time, neither do they want China to excel, or else how can they prove that their decision to immigrate was correct! OMNI Television producer Ding Guo pointed out some overseas Chinese’ mindsets in the “Cultural China” forum held on July 10th.

In the beginning, the influential current events commentator announced that China has passed through the economic crisis, and Canada is also the first nation in the West to come out of the economic crisis.” For this, it is such a joyful news for the Chinese Canadians.

Immediately after Zhao Xiao, influential China’s economic scholar, finished his speech, Ding continued to speak about the contributions that the Chinese in North America can make towards the rebuilding of China’s civilization.

In an example, Ding said that overseas Chinese criticize China’s lack of democracy, but the problem is that after coming to Canada, they don’t vote or exercise their citizen’s rights; we criticize China for falsifications, but how many people are here making false reports in order to receive tax benefits? If we cannot be honest ourselves, then how can we ask the people in China to do so? Many Chinese parents value their children’s education and grades, but neglect the character development – are we also the same?

Ding bluntly stated that what’s better than stringently demanding that the Chinese people to fulfill them is to examine ourselves. Have we made environmental protection, participation in the society, charity donations, and holistic education as our own ways of life?

Ding encouraged overseas Chinese to become the example.

“When we go back home to visit relatives, we can influence those beside us. There are around 60 million Chinese overseas, who have enormous influence towards the building of China’s spiritual civilization,” he said.

With the theme “Beginning from Economic Awakening to the Building of Spiritual Values”, “Cultural China” forum is hosted by Cultural Regeneration Research Society. The guest speakers were Dr. Zhao Xiao, Dr. Ding Guo, and Dr. Thomas In-sing Leung.
