Cher Wang, HTC’s co-founder and chairman, recently quoted scripture and optimistically shouted out that HTC will set new records in 2013 when addressing her company employees at their annual thanksgiving banquet held last Friday in Taipei. That night, HTC’s new phone M7 was also unveiled.

According to Central News Agency, Wang, who has been ranked 56th on Forbes’ list of powerful women, said that last year HTC faced various challenges, but every challenge is yet another opportunity to achieve new heights. She quoted former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, “Kites rise highest against the wind, not with it.” Moreover, she quoted a Bible verse, “Humility comes before honor.”

Addressing the crowd, Wang, 54, said that every time she sees the new phone M7 that is to be released in February she would be touched, because it is the cumulative result of efforts of the many HTC’s employees. She hopes that the employees can together ignite, create, and fulfill the dreams. That night, there were over 1,085 tables and tens of thousands of employees participated.

“We are filled with faith, and we will once again achieve new heights,” she said.

While Wang’s message was filled with direct quotations from the Bible and connotations of Christian faith, the event itself featured Christian elements: performance groups, such as Heavenly Melody, and Chinese-American pop-artists, like Wang LeeHom, who is a Christian. In addition, the open screen of the overhead projection read, “The path to dreams will inevitably face challenges, press on towards the goal…,” paired with the opening song “You Raise Me Up.”

Wang is the daughter of the late Wang Yung-ching, Taiwan’s petrochemical industrial giant and one of Taiwan’s wealthiest people. Friends of hers and reporters who know her can attest to her habitual reference to God as faith is the essence of her life and career. She lives a simple life and tries to keep out of the limelight despite her many accomplishments.

As a devout Christian and avid philanthropist, Wang has donated US $28.1 million to help found Guizhou Forerunner College, a charitable college in southwest China set up by VIA Technologies' non-profit Faith-Hope-Love Foundation. In addition, Wang donated 6,000 HTC Flyer tablet PCs to 60 high schools in Taipei in August 2012.
