Katy Perry said she received a message from God right before her performance at the Super Bowl at the Grammys 2015, where she also appear in the performance lineup, giving a rendition of her song "By The Grace of God."
The singer, whose performance of her hit song "Dark Horse" at last year's Grammys allegedly prompted Christian singer Natalie Grant to walk out for its overtly dark imagery, told E! News host Ryan Seacrest that she prepared for her half time show by leaning on her faith.
"I over prepared myself and did a lot of prayer and meditation," Perry told Seacrest at the 57th annual Grammy Awards at the Staples Center, Los Angeles, on Sunday, February 8, 2015.
She added, "It's funny, I was praying and I got a word from God and He says, 'You got this and I got you.' And then I was on top of the lion and a guy, a random guy, just looked on me with a headset that I've never communicated with before and he just looked me straight in the eyes and said, 'You got this.' And I was like, 'Oh, this is God confirming I can do this."
After the Super Bowl performance, Perry tweeted Psalm 118:24, "Today is the day that the Lord has made! I will rejoice and be glad in it."
Perry's latest remarks came as a surprise as she had only recently made it clear that she no longer believed in God. "I don't believe in a heaven or a hell or an old man sitting on a throne. I believe in a higher power bigger than me because that keeps me accountable," she said in a recent interview with GQ. "I believe in a lot of astrology. I believe in aliens. I look up into the stars and I imagine: How self-important are we to think that we are the only life-form?"
In recent years, Perry has made a point to let her fans know that she is not the Christian Gospel singer that she once was.
Besides singing "By The Grace of God" at the Super Bowl, Perry also performed the hit song "I Kissed a Girl" from her second album that sky-rocketed her into the spotlight, which Answers in Genesis' CEO Ken Ham called "meaningless garbage" and "sensual and evil."
Katy started her music career out under her real name, Katy Hudson, on her 2001 debut album of the same name. When she didn't find success with Red Hill Records and the Gospel music scene, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue secular music under the new name Katy Perry (using her mother's maiden name).
Whether her latest comments are genuine, Perry's influence towards the culture is tremendous, so Christians should continue to pray that there will be a change in the contents of her performances, and that she may receive the Lord Jesus Christ as her savior and live her life for Him. While she was raised by Pentecostal pastors as parents, she is ultimately responsible for her own faith, and only God has the power to change her.
