Mario Kart 9 Release Dates on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS; Mario Kart 7 and 8 Top Most Sold Games of All Time

In the latest round-up of top-selling Wii U and 3DS games of all-time, Mario dominated the sales charts, especially when it comes to racing games. Mario Kart 7 and 8 made record-breaking sales, selling millions of copies around the world. With that developments, expect Nintendo to savor the spotlight for the upcoming release of Mario Kart 9.

As of December 31, 2015, Mario Kart 8 is winning the sales-chart on Wii U, finishing with a huge lead of more than two million sales against the second place New Super Mario Bros U. It is interesting to note that seven of the top ten Wii U titles came from Mario franchise. Even the game New Super Luigi U, which excluded Mario, landed on the top-ten list.

According to Time, Nintendo Company made a pile of unexpected income from their Wii U games. In 2014, the multinational Japanese company earned 14.3 billion yen in net income, or about $132 million, for the six-month fiscal period that ended in September.

1.       Mario Kart 8 -- 7.24 million units

2.       New Super Mario Bros. U -- 5.08 million units

3.       Nintendo Land -- 5.02 million units

4.       Super Mario 3D World -- 4.63 million units

5.       Super Smash Bros for Wii U -- 4.61 million units

6.       Splatoon -- 4.06 million units

7.       Super Mario Maker -- 3.34 million units

8.       New Super Luigi U -- 2.42 million units

9.       The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD -- 1.69 million units

10.   Mario Party 10 -- 1.65 million units

For the 3DS titles, on the other hand, another game from Mario franchise ranked high in the sales chart.  Mario Kart 7 landed as second place, and it only came up short from Pokemon X/Y, which sold 14.46 million units worldwide.

6.       Animal Crossing: New Leaf -- 9.86 million units

7.       Super Smash Bros for 3DS -- 7.92 million units

8.       Tomodachi Life -- 4.89 million units

9.       Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon -- 4.75 million units

10.   nintendogs+cats -- 3.96 million units

Meanwhile, let's talk about the highly anticipated Mario Kart 9. Online reports say the new installment in the Mario Kart series will be made available on the Nintendo NX and will be released in 2017.  The game is the sequel of Mario Kart 8 for the Wii U. Moreover, it will become the twelfth installment in the overall series and the ninth for the racing series.

Furthermore, the launching of the upcoming Mario racing game marks the celebration of Mario Kart series' 25th Anniversary and the Mario and Sonic series' 10th Anniversary as well.
