It is no secret that the Mortal Kombat is one of the biggest fighting game franchises ever. It is also no secret that Mortal Kombat XL, a follow-up (but not official sequel) to Mortal Kombat X, has just been released, and it includes both the Kombat Pack 1 and the Kombat Pack 2. The next question that should be asked is what is next for the fighting game franchise, or Kombat Pack 3.
Last year, Ed Boon, the showrunner for the Mortal Kombat franchise, released four figures in silhouette that were going to be the next four characters that players could fight with in Mortal Kombat X, the Kombat Pack 2. In January of this year, the Kombat Pack 2 was revealing including Leatherface (from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise), Triborg (combination of cyborgs Sektor, Cyrax, and Smoke), Alien (from the Alien movie franchise), and Bo'Rai Cho. It is four characters, but Event Hubs points out that Tri-borg is like four different characters rolled into one, making that practically seven characters.
Perhaps the better question is whether or not there will be a Kombat Pack 3. A recent survey on GameFaqs found that 15 percent said "yes", 45 percent said "no", and 40 percent said "maybe".
There were after all, a lot of fans of the game that were disappointed that popular Mortal Kombat fighters like Rain and Baraka didn't make the cut for Kombat Pack 2. There were a lot of rumors back when Boon showed off the silhouettes that they would appear, as well as player characters (PCs) like Smoke.
The issue was that Leatherface and Alien, who were born from movie franchises and not the Mortal Kombat game itself, are PCs. This is really opening up possibilities to who NetherRealm Studios can add as far as fighters are concerned.
In fact, there was a rumor going around last year that Spawn, a comic-book character and star of a B-rated movie, was going to be one of the fighters. There was even a quote from Spawn's creator Todd McFarlene that he would approve of such a choice, so there is that remote possibility.
Considering that Mortal Kombat X is produced with Warner Brothers, the parent company of DC comics, it would make sense if DC comics characters showed up. However, many don't like the idea of Batman or Superman showing up, in spite of the upcoming movie where both of them are engaged in mortal combat.
If Mortal Kombat wishes to pull from horror movie franchises and comic books, then why not pull from other video game sources? Some have suggested that Kratos, a character from the God of War franchise, could appear on the fighter list, just as he did appear in the 2011 version of the game. Why not pull from Duke Nukem or Doom while we're at it?
Whatever the case, Kombat Pack 3 has not been officially announced and might not ever be. The fanbase could still make their suggestions to Ed Boon, though.
