It has been about a year since Mortal Kombat X was released to gamers, and since then, the fighting game has had the release of two hit Kombat Packs with lots of great downloadable content (DLC) player fighters, and a whole lot more, such as Mortal Kombat XL, which features both Kombat Pack 1 and 2. Ed Boon, showrunner of the fighting series, promised "big news" today, but it might not be what players were expecting. However, it does open a world of possibilities of Kombat Pack 3 and a possible Injustice 2, with possible cross-over.
According to iDigitalTimes, Ed Boon posted on March 29th on Twitter that there would be some "big news tomorrow". Now that it is March 30th, so far the tweets have revealed some big news of "Happy to announce SEASON 3 of the Mortal Kombat X Pro League! Bigger and Better than ever with $500,00 in prizes". It was then followed up with another tweet saying "More info on the MKX Pro League! The prize pool for the finals will be DOUBLE Season 2's pool. Yes, winners will split $200,000 thistime!"
This was later followed by another tweet which led to ESL Gaming, which talked about how this season will match the greatest 16 players from across the world traveling to Burbank, California to compete in the Global Season 3 Finals.
Assuming that this is all the news for the day, this might be considered by some to be a let-down. A lot of people are looking forward to the announcement of Injustice 2. This would be a sequel to the fighting game based on DC heroes with Injustice: Gods Among Us. That game featured a lot of one-on-one between iconic DC heroes and villains, and very similar to Mortal Kombat X, and developed by NetherRealm Studios and Warner Brothers Interactive.
Well, it doesn't look like that long-awaited announcement for the sequel of that game is available. In its place, many fans are wanting to see a Kombat Pack 3. Last year was the unveiling of the Kombat Pack 2, and Ed Boon showed off some silhouettes that were revealed in 2016 to be player characters of Leatherface (from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise), Triborg (combination of cyborgs Sektor, Cyrax, and Smoke), Alien (from the Alien movie franchise), and Bo'Rai Cho.
A lot of people were hoping that Kombat Pack 2 would reveal previous Mortal Kombat characters like Rain, Baraka, and Sindel, but that also didn't really happen. However, the fact that two out of the four characters are plucked from other franchises shows how much Kombat Pack 3 could have.
Not only could Kombat Pack 3 also feature Mortal Kombat characters, but they could be taken from horror movies or maybe even DC comics. Of course, with Injustice 2 using those characters licensed from Warner Brothers, there might never be a crossover here...or could there be? Yes, that would be big news. Perhaps this is something that Warner Brothers is working on, because it would be something that fans would at least want to try out.
