With the Android 5.1 Lollipop Update for Moto X (2013) rolling out this month, a similar Moto X (2014) update is reportedly still in the works. Naturally, mobile device owners are wondering when carriers such as AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, and U.S. Cellular will start rolling out the newer Android update.

Moto X (2013)

In early April, Motorola spokesman David Shuster confirmed that the expected Android 5.0.2 Lollipop rollout for the Moto X (2013) was indeed cancelled. Instead, the first-generation Moto X will be jumping forward to the Android 5.1 Lollipop Update.

Unfortunately, the Android 5.1 Lollipop update Moto X (2013) is only available for Brazilian users at this time. It is not clear when Motorola will start making Android 5.1 Lollipop available to major U.S. wireless service providers.

One reason why Lollipop has been delayed for the Moto X (2013) is due to the device's date Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset. In March, Motorola conducted a limited-scale Android 5.0 soak test for the Moto X (2013).  Though test results were never made public, the Moto X (2013) did not receive the expected Android 5.0.2 Lollipop Update.

Until the Android 5.1 Lollipop Update arrives, all Moto X (2013) devices are stuck on the older Android KitKat. The official announcement on the Motorola site simply states, "This device will be upgraded to Android 5 Lollipop release of Android, pending partner support."

While it is possible to install Android 5 Lollipop on an unlocked Moto X, Motorola warns that doing so may affect future updates. Less experienced users may consider waiting for an official update from Motorola instead. Please, read Motorola's FAQ for further details.

Moto X (2014)

Unlike its Moto X (2013) predecessor, the Moto X (2014) received the Android Lollipop fairly quickly. Currently, Android 5.0.2 for Moto X (2014) is available at AT&T and US Cellular.

Meanwhile, Verizon has rolled out the older Android 5.0 Lollipop update for its version of Moto X (2014). T-Mobile and Sprint do not carry the second generation Moto X.

Last month, Motorola announced that it was testing Android 5.1 Lollipop on the Moto X (2014). Since then, the tech giant has given the silent treatment regarding a possible rollout schedule for the Moto X (2014) Lollipop Update. Happily, the Android Lollipop rollout for the Moto X (2014) will not be affected by the same technical difficulties that delayed the Moto X (2013) Lollipop Update.
