Nintendo Switch Update: Latest Rumors, GameCube Virtual Console Support

Eurogamer reports that Nintendo Switch will be adding a support of GameCube games in its Virtual Console. Apparently, this information has been revealed by three separate sources. There are three games mentioned: Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion and Super Smash Bros. Melee. Nintendo is yet to reveal further details about its upcoming Switch at on online event in January. Avid gamers still have to wait until March to really get a hold of the new console. For now, there are a number of rumors that have been circling online. The recent one is a report that claimed the Nintendo Switch will be adding a support of GameCube games in its Virtual Console.

Eurogamer reported that three separate sources have confirmed that the GameCube support has already been tested and is currently working. Apparently, it will include the games Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion and Super Smash Bros. Melee. The Animal Crossing will also be added later. It should be noted that Nintendo has already included Virtual Console in its other platforms Wii, Wii U and 3DS. It makes sense that the Switch will also have one as well. However, GameCube games are yet to be offered for sale.

The report also said that Switch' Virtual Console might also have an upgrade program akin to the Wii U. Furthermore, the Virtual Console is supposedly being engineered by the Nintendo European Research and Development (NERD). In case you did know, they are the ones behind the recently released and successful product NES Mini-micro console. According to The Verge, Nintendo will likely offer the games from the NES and SNES consoles on the Switch. It is also said that Nintendo may be "looking at Switch support for the Wii U's GameCube controller adapter peripheral".

The timing of having these GameCube titles on Switch's Virtual Console can be driven by the fact that the console is powerful enough to handle the games. This is based on the results of Digital Foundry's tests. They wanted to know how the GameCube's Dolphin emulator could fare on the Nvidia Tegra X1 mobile technology. The Switch is powered by the said chipset.

Eurogamer had also previously reported that the new console will have a 6.2-inch 720p multi-touch screen. In addition, once it is released, it will have its own version of Pokémon Sun and Moon. It will be called Pokémon Stars. Another rumor is the new characters in Super Smash Bros for Nintendo Switch. According to PVP Live, this has been shared by gaming industry historian and YouTube Liam Robertson. He said in a tweet, "I guess we're leaking stuff, so okay, there will be some (not many) new characters in Smash Bros Switch."

Since none of these have been confirmed by Nintendo, you should probably have to wait until next year to see if they will eventually turn out to be true.
