When Nintendo was showing off footage from their newest The Legend of Zelda for the Wii U, they said that first would come a new Star Fox game.  Unfortunately, The Legend of Zelda for the Wii U has been delayed seemingly indefinitely, and so was the newest Star Fox Zero game.  However, it looks like Star Fox Zero is coming to pass, and there is going to be something extra special with it with Star Fox Guard, a separate game. This is the latest news on Star Fox Zero and Star Fox Guard, with release dates and prices.

According to Ubergizmo, Star Fox Zero is set to arrive on the Nintendo Wii U on April 22.  The game will continue its tradition of being a shooter game with some 3D scrolling, and producer Shigeru Miyamoto, as well as Nintendo, want viewers to know that it is neither a sequel nor a prequel to the series, so this could be a reboot.

What makes Star Fox Zero unique is that the game will have a dual-screen mechanic that can turn the Wii U GamePad into a view of the cockpit of the Arwing fighter used in the Star Fox franchise.  A monitor will also show the perspective from behind the Arwing, so it appears that the game is taking advantage of the Wii U's controller.

Also included in this package is another game known as Star Fox: Guard.  This is a tower-defense style of a game, and you can download both games separately as digital releases.  Nintendo Direct states that both games will be bundled together for a standard game price of $60, with the main standalone Star Fox Zero game being $50 and the Star Fox Guard as $15.  According to Gamespot, Star Fox Guard was actually revealed at E3 two years ago.  It introduces a new character, Slippy Toad's uncle, named Grippy.

If you are not familiar with the Star Fox series, it follows a group of anthropomorphic characters that almost feel like the cast of Zootopia.  However, these characters are a mercenary unit in space in the Lylat system, so there is a science fiction twist there.

What is interesting about Star Fox is how it has affected video game and the technology as a whole.  The original Star Fox came to the Super Nintendo in 1993, and it was able to simulate 3D graphics in a world of 2D games that could only be made on consoles of that time, using the Super FX chip.  It wasn't until Star Fox 64 was revealed in 1997 when the game was in full three-dimensional graphics that included a Rumble Pak as well as full spoken dialogue.

It is possible that Star Fox Zero is kind of the last song for the Wii U, as there has been a lot of words that the Nintendo NX next generation console is on the way.
