Considering that Batman has Gotham on Fox, it makes sense that Superman has his hit prequel series (besides Smallville) with Krypton.  This series has been in development for a year-and-a-half, and the show will take place on the planet of Superman's birth before he was sent to Earth in a rocket by his father, Jor-El.  This is what is known about SyFy's Krypton Release Date and its showrunners. 

According to Deadline Hollywood, the show is being developed by David S. Goyer, who wrote the last Batman trilogy as well as the prequel to Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice.  Damian Kindler is planned to be the showrunner, and Goyer and Kindler are still working on the pilot episode. 

Now, with a concept like this, one would think that show would focus just on the destruction of Krypton that we all see coming seasons before the series finale.  Krypton is set two generations before the destruction of Superman's homeworld.  It will follow Superman's grandfather, with the House of El being ostracized and shamed to redeem his family's honor and save his beloved world from chaos.

The biggest question of Krypton is the subject of canon.  Considering that Marvel had its Avengers Cinematic Universe that spans from Guardians of the Galaxy to the newest Spider-Man movie, and it bleeds over to Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Netflix series like Daredevil and Jessica Jones. 

DC has its Arrow universe that spans Arrow, Flash, and DC's Legends of Tomorrow,  then the show Supergirl that was recently discontinued is not tied into this universe at all.  DC is jumpstarting its Cinematic Universe with Batman V. Superman, which will spawn two Justice League films, plus individual films on Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg. 

So where does Krypton fit in?  Will it be its own universe like Smallville was?  Considering that one of the criticisms of Man of Steel was a lot of focus on Krypton, it is possible that Krypton could be a direct tie-in, but considering it takes place so long before Man of Steel, could the typical viewer even tell? 

There have been attempts at telling the story of Krypton before.  It was the first Limited series of a comic book back in 1979 called World of Krypton to tell the story of Superman's homeworld.  In the eighties, Superman was given a reboot, and the backstory behind Krypton was changed for another World of Krypton limited series that revealed that the world had its own Clone Wars and a weapon that left enough residential radiation to eventually destroy the planet. 

This version of Krypton from the eighties has more than likely been redone again.  There was a novel written by Kevin J. Anderson the detailed The Last Days of Krypton, which talked about the Brainiac stealing the city of Kandor, which could make for an interesting storyline. 

There's no slated release date for this show, but something like this could take a while.  I wouldn't be surprised if Krypton showed up on the SyFy channel in Fall of 2017.
