Nintendo is certainly out to achieve quite a number of firsts in the year 2017. There is the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild which will be the first Zelda game in Nintendo’s long and chequered history that will offer paid downloadable content once the main game has launched. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the WIld will sport a Season Pass, otherwise known as an Expansion Pass under Nintendo’s very own words. This Expansion Pass for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will cost $19.99 a pop which comprises of a couple of DLC (downloadable content) packs, and you can be sure that there will be more from where that came from in the future. After all, Nintendo is not one who will not milk a cow dry, and the magic thing is, their cows do seem to never run out of milk. The other first for this year? The upcoming Nintendo Switch console which can be considered to be a hybrid console of sorts, letting you play at home in front of the TV and then removing a part of the console with small controllers attached to it for a mobile gaming experience of the same game, doing so in a seamless manner.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s first Expansion Pass will be accompanied by a Cave of Trials challenge, a brand new hard mode to further challenge gamers who think that they have gotten the game down pat, as well as a yet unknown new feature that will be introduced to the in-game map. There will be another DLC pack which will be released after the first is revealed this summer, and that would be launched this holiday season at the end of the year, where it will comprise of a new dungeon to explore (and with it, more treasures and engaging storylines) as well as additional story content.
These two DLCs can be purchased together, and not separately, and best of all is, Wii U owners do not have to fret since this DLC will be available for not only the Nintendo Switch, but also for Wii U owners. As for enterprising gamers who decide to fork out the additional $19.99 in order to purchase the Expansion Pass, they will also be on the receiving end of a trio of special in-game chests.
The first of these chests will include a shirt with the Nintendo Switch icon on it which can be worn by Link for some unique in-game advertising and subtle endorsement, while the other two chests will boast of items that might just come in handy in the game.
Perhaps The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is so large in its scope, that Nintendo would like to ensure that content is constantly added after the game’s launch so that fans and gamers will be happy. It is no different from other games out there, as Nintendo finally jumps aboard the DLC bandwagon. Perhaps it is Nintendo’s way of keeping up with the times by being a relevant video game company, as inevitable as it is, this is a very different Nintendo from the one that I have come to know and love. Thankfully, with Nintendo, we are constantly assured that their titles tend to be top notch games that should be worth every penny.
