The world of video games is a highly competitive, and most of the games shown off at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) this year were those that were tied to a franchise like Mass Effect: Andromeda, Star Wars: Battlefront, Fallout 4, and Nintendo didn't even have any new game that wasn't associated with any new intellectual property. Then, from out of nowhere, EA unveils a physics based platformer known as Unravel, which was also developed by Coldwood Interactive. This is what is known about the Unravel game confirmed at E3 2015, with the release date, news, and updates, along with a Trailer.
According to the official video game site, the man character of the game is Yarny, a creation that is made of yarn and literally unravels more of himself as he goes on his journeys. Yarny is trying to "re-connect the memories of a long lost family" in a "tale without words".
The gameplay of Unravel looks incredible, and the setting is "inspired from the lush environments of Northern Scandinavia" that look photo-realistic. Like a typical video game character, Yarny goes from place to place, but Yarny uses his stringy self to overcome the obstacles. For example, he'll use his yarn like a fishing line to hitch a ride with a fish, or tie his stringy self to a kite for air travel. Since Yarney is unraveling as he goes, it is possible that he could be depleting himself. This element of the game could make the gameplay and puzzles that the player solves more interesting.
The game's trailer definitely make it look interesting, and it can be seen on the official website as well as on Gamerant. While the trailer makes Unravel look very cute, the melancholy music in the background has a very odd effect. It is possible that the story behind Yarny's journey is going to be a sad one. The Creative Director at Coldwood Interactive, Martin Sahlin, has stated that "I wanted to make something more personal, something with more impact. The game didn't have to change the world, or even try, but it had to be genuine, it had to have deeper meaning. It had to have heart."
Even though it looks like Unravel looks like it is meant to be a competitor with a Nintendo game known as Yoshi's Wooly World (also unveiled at E3 2015), it looks to be a whole lot more spectacular. In fact, the idea that the game has heart makes it feel like something less like a video game and more like something Pixar would put out, but it could have a more darker streak.
Unfortunately, there is no word on Unravel's release date, and even IGN, a reputable video games website, has no idea. Considering the hype that this game has been getting, it needs to come out soon, like around the holiday season. Don't quote me on that, but EA knows that this is when video games sell the most, and really needs to meet that deadline. In spite of what might be a tragic backstory to Yarny, Unravel looks like the perfect gift video game that the entire family can play.
