Last week was a huge week for video games with the annual convention at the LA Convention Center known as E3. Nintendo had about one thing on display at E3 2016, and that was the next The Legend of Zelda game, which will be known as The Breath of the Wild. Considering that Nintendo has several games as its intellectual property, the one that it is most known for, Mario, could also be given a new treatment.
According to Ubergizmo, the creator of Mario, Shigeru Miyamoto, has stated that Nintendo could unveil a "new kind of Mario" at E3 2017. He stated that "we're always challenging ourselves to create something new, so hopefully you'll see a new kind of Mario in about a year or two.
As most of you know, Nintendo is going to launch a next generation console known as the Nintendo NX in March of 2017. It will probably have some kind of packaged deal with the new The Legend of Zelda game, but it really makes the potential for Mario equally huge.
Mario has changed a lot since he was the main character for Donkey Kong. He essentially became his own character with Luigi in Mario Brothers and then Super Mario Brothers. From there, it was all about creating games based in the franchise that had very little to do with character.
Miyamoto has admitted that it will be difficult to refresh Mario when its conventions have been established for quite a while. As next generations of Nintendo consoles revealed better 3-D graphics, it usually just comes down to jumping and platforming. One of the last Mario games, Super Mario 3D World, was essentially a cross between the 2D Super Mario games and the 3D Super Mario Galaxy. This game, although quite fun, do not really offer anything new to the Mario world.
The issue is that Nintendo has used this character to build their video game empire, and it is really has kept their company afloat, even with the hard competition of Xbox One and the Sony PS4.
In fact, it seems that Nintendo could be late in the game if they intend to announce Mario next year. If Nintendo is going to have a new console coming in March of next year, then it would make sense to have some kind of leak of this new Mario game before that.
At this point, let's see what our readers have to say. What do you want to see Nintendo put in a new Mario game? That, or should they even make a new Mario game? Oh, who am I kidding, Nintendo is not every going to let Mario go. The issue is how much can you take this character?
