Now that Google has had their big announcement this week concerning their new Nexus devices, the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P, they have already released the Android 6.0 (also known as Android M or Marshmallow) to other manufacturers of Android devices. However, upgrades of Android have traditionally been slow, as was demonstrated last year with Android 5.0 (also known as Android L or Lollipop) as well as its newer versions like the latest, 5.1.1. When it comes to the Motorola's smartphones like the Motorola Moto G 1st Gen, 2nd Gen, 3rd Gen as well as the Moto E 2013 & 2014, there is some good news and some bad news.
According to Droid Life, Motorola posted its official list of devices that will receive the Android 6.0 update, and it includes the Moto X Pure Edition, Moto G (2nd Gen, 3rd Gen, and LTE 2nd Gen), as well as the Droid Turbo. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like these updates will be coming very soon.
An announcement on the company's blog has stated: "We have high standards, so we'll work fast but we won't push the upgrades out until we know they're ready. Look for more news on timing in the coming weeks".
According to Tech Gadget Central, Motorola has disclosed that the next Moto G update for all the devices in the line-up is going to be Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, and it should be complete by 2016, and this included all generations of the Moto G. This version of Android is already on this year's model, and it is expected on the 1st Gen of the G by December at the latest. Android 6.0 should be ready by then, but will roll out as slowly as Android 5.0 did. Considering that version had a lot of bugs, perhaps it is better to wait on Marshmallow.
It should be noted that Android Police has found omissions that include carrier variants of any version of the Moto E, as well as the 2013 Moto G (1st Gen). As far as this goes, perhaps it should be assumed that Android 5.1.1 will be as high as it goes with at least the Moto G 1st Gen.
As for the Moto E, versions 2013 and 2014, this really seems like double-talk on behalf of Motorola. Back in February 2015, Motorola said this: "And while other smartphones in this category don't always support upgrades, we won't forget about you, and we'll make sure your Moto E stays up to date after you buy it".
Yes, that does feel like a raw deal coming from Motorola as a separate article from Android Police says that the Moto E 2015 is one of the shortest OS-level support lifetimes of any Motorola product in recent memory. Apparently, Motorola promised upgrades with an asterisk, that users of the Moto E would get one. Since it launched with Android 5.0 and was later upgraded to Android 5.1, this counts as keeping their promise.
