'Archer' coming back for Season 8 and more, but will Sterling be back? FX Network

Archer was quite an unexpected hit for FX when it had originally aired back in 2010. The idea of a spy who is essentially a mama's boy was like an animated combination of James Bond meets The Office, but it has lasted seven seasons, and will last even longer than that.  This is what is known about Archer Season 8 with its release date, rumors, not to mention spoilers as far as the fate of Sterling Archer from the last season.

Well, even though Season 7 ended on a tone of finality (spoilers below, so stop reading if you don't want to know), Archer has been renewed for not just one, but three more seasons according to iDigitalTimes.  It isn't common for a series to be renewed for three seasons, especially after it has had seven seasons, but Nick Grad, president of original programming for FX Networks believes that the show is "so insanely funny and vital" in spite of its long run-time.

Okay, now for the spoilers.  Season 7 of Archer focused on the gang of former spies, who had essentially lost everything by botching every mission that they could take in Season 6.  The group of Sterling, Lana, Cheryl, Cyril, Ray, Pam, Krieger, and Malory started a private detective agency in homage to Magnum P.I., in the first episode of last season.  Season 7 had an episodic nature as there was a Hollywood murder mystery, and then Sterling Archer, the main character and show's namesake was killed.

Oh, there was this thing in the final episode in which Archer had a robot duplicate, but that duplicate was killed as well.  Yes, it is Archer, and technology like that exists in that world.  Then Archer was shot in the guts, fell in the half-frozen river, and then was bleeding under it for hours.

So, with this development, how in the world will they bring Archer back?  Well, the show has introduced a character named Barry Dylan, who is a cyborg.  It seemed like Barry was dead, but then he came back.  Also, Archer once tried to marry a woman named Katyz Kazanova, who was killed by Barry.  Then Katya came back, as a cyborg, who started dating Barry.  So yes, there is this cyborg option to resurrect Archer.

The other plan is that Archer could not come back, as many of the other side characters have been developed very well and could carry the show.  Well, maybe not on their own, but perhaps as an ensemble cast, it could work.

It is possible that the show could spend the entirety of Season 8 focusing on side characters, and finally resurrecting Archer somehow.  That, or just get Archer's resurrection out of the way, and carry on like they have other seasons.

Archer will return to FX in 2017, and hopefully, it won't arrive late like Season 7, and possibly show up at its usual January time.
