DC is really banking a lot on Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, as not only will it feature a cinematic clash between the Man of Steel and the Caped Crusader, but it will also start off another phase of the DC's Cinematic Universe. Unlike the many films and television shows that Marvel is releasing in their film adaptations of their comic book source material, DC currently only has one offering with Man of Steel. There is a new trailer for the film which really shows the Pros and Cons of DC's Cinematic Universe, and why it could exceed Marvel's movies, or completely blow up in DC's face.
There are a lot of things that this movie has going for it from the new trailer as seen below. It shows how Clark Kent (Henry Cavill) and Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) meet for the very first time. It's very clear that the two of them in their civilian identities have both a mutual respect and yet strongly disagree with each other, which is clearly foreshadowing the fight to take place at the end between their superhero personas of Batman and Superman.
Enter Lex Luthor, played by Jesse Eisenberg, who is really hamming up his role as Superman's greatest foe, and as eccentric as he can be. He is not like Lex Luthor of past screen adaptations, who come off as cold, controlling, and bald. Although much of the trailer reveals a lot about the three of these characters, it is clear that everything in this film is going to be some wink to the comic book fanboy audience.
There are some additions to the trailers that were only hinted at from previous trailers, and one of them is Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, and she will be fighting with both Superman and Batman. It looks like the battle between Superman and Batman will be joined by a famous DC villain named Doomsday, who is a computer-generated gray alien seen at the end. Doomsday is most famous for being the one who killed Superman back in the nineties, and it would be interesting if this is how this film ended.
Even though there is a lot going on in this film, this could be what kills this film. Many superhero films based on comic book source material often go the wrong direction with their adaptation, and they attempt to stuff in as many fan-favorite stories and characters from the comics. The end result is often a superhero film that is not well-received by fans like Spider-Man 3, X-men 3: The Last Stand, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. All three examples had too many things going on within them, and Batman v. Superman looks like it could have the same problems with the additions of Wonder Woman, as well as Aquaman (Jason Momoa), and rumors of The Flash (Ezra Miller) and Batgirl (Jena Malone).
Expect to see Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice on March 24, 2016. It will be followed up with Suicide Squad which should give some insight on Batman and the Joker, and there will be a Wonder Woman movie as well as two Justice League movies. All I can say for DC with a plan like this is: your Batman v. Superman film had better work.
