BlackBerry rolls onward with the Android bandwagon through the unveiling of its second Android smartphone known as the DTEK50. The DTEK50 will not challenge the hierarchy in the flagship smartphone range, but rather, dwell in the mid-range with a design that is reminiscent of the Alcatel Idol 4. BlackBerry is proud to claim that the DTEK50 is the "world's most secure smartphone", which is certainly a claim that raises eyebrows although it is well within BlackBerry's capabilities to lay stake to such boasts.
How Much?
The DTEK50 from BlackBerry is already available for pre-order directly from today for $299.99 a pop, and August 8th has been targeted for its availability. Expect the DTEK50 to play nice with both AT&T and T-Mobile networks over in the US. This means Sprint and Verizon subscribers will have to give the DTEK50 a miss this time around.
Hardware Specifications
Just what kind of hardware will the DTEK50 pack? For starters, your eyes will be treated to a 5.2-inch, 1080p display, while a Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 processor runs proceedings from underneath the hood that is kept company by 3GB of RAM. If you need to snap some memorable moments, then the 13-megapixel camera at the back will be able to get the job done. Selfie lovers and video chat enthusiasts will definitely find the 8-megapixel front-facing camera with flash being more than capable of freezing those narcissistic moments with ease.
Armed with a 2,610mAh battery, you should be able to get a decent day's performance out of it. Android 6.0 Marshmallow will be the heart of the software that keeps the DTEK50 going, while BlackBerry's software features such as the Hub will also be thrown into the mix. To get a better idea on how the DTEK50 will work like in terms of software, it should not be too far away from what the Prv carried last year.
Oh yes, do take note that there will be no physical keyboard with the DTEK50, so BlackBerry purists might be disappointed with this particular aspect.
Security Is The Name Of The Game
What makes the DTEK50 as the 'world's most secure' Android smartphone? Kicking it off, the name of the device gives the game away. BlackBerry's DTEK software is able to offer protection for users against malware and other security issues that are the bane of Android smartphones. With the DTEK app, users are able to glean an overview of the device's security, while being proactive against any potential challenges and threats.
BlackBerry claims that it has tinkered with Android and done its fair bit of changes using its own technology that was first meant for the BB10 platform in order to enhance security. Not only that, BlackBerry intends to roll out frequent updates via security patches in order to up the ante. How frequent would these updates be? It seems that the security patches will arrive on the very same day that Google reveals such information to the public. Now that's fast!
