Since the early 90s, the "Mortal Kombat" and "Killer Instinct" franchises have been competing for the title of the bloodiest fighting game around. But, through recent tweets made by two distinct industry leaders, it seems there is a possibility that a crossover featuring these two titles might happen soon.

Earlier this week, a gamer teased about the idea of a crossover game for "Mortal Kombat" and "Killer Instinct." This reached Ed Boon, the creator of the MK series and creative director for NetherRealm Studios, and noted that he is a fan of "Killer Instinct."

However, since the fighting game series is currently owned by Microsoft Studios, Boon noted that if ever a crossover game does happen, then it will probably be exclusive to the Xbox platform.

Then, a few days later, Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft's Xbox division, commented on the matter and said that he loves the idea of a crossover between "Mortal Kombat" and "Killer Instinct."

However, even though these two gaming chiefs are onboard with the concept of a crossover title, this doesn't necessarily mean that the game will happen anytime soon.

For one, Boon and NetherRealm Studios are currently busy working on "Injustice 2" while Microsoft is still carrying out the finishing touches for the third season of "Killer Instinct 3."

But then again, if current projects are the only factors preventing NetherRealm and Microsoft from joining forces for a crossover game, then it means this fantasy title can still happen in the future.

However, things aren't that simple because as Boon pointed out, the game will only be available for the Xbox consoles if it gets developed. This, of course, would alienate the bulk of "Mortal Kombat" fans, who also enjoy playing the game on the PlayStation platform.

Still, a crossover game featuring "Mortal Kombat" and Killer Instinct" is a great idea and can finally settle the debate as to which character from these two franchises is deadlier. Hopefully, NetherRealm and Microsoft will be able to work out all of the complicated factors surrounding this fantasy project to make the game possible.
