It is pretty clear that Marvel has so much going on in their comics as well as their films, not to mention their shows on Netflix.  Daredevil was clearly a hit for them, and so three more shows that were part of the plan include Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist.  Like the Avengers, these heroes will be brought on the screen at the same time, but what will they face as a new super team of The Defenders

According to TV Line, Marco Ramirez and Douglas Petrie, who were the showrunners for Daredevil Season 2, will be the showrunners for The DefendersMarvel has said that all of those four of these heroes will come together to face their "biggest threat yet".

Marvel TV Boss Jeph Loeb, who has a history for working on comics, has stated that "We're incredibly excited to be able to bring our four street-level heroes together in an epic tale woven by Doug and Marco, whose work on Marvel's Daredevil speaks for itself."

So, we know the story is going to be epic, and there will be the "biggest threat yet", but what could it be?  Considering that Daredevil Season 2 laid down a lot of subplots that were never really involved, much of which involved (Spoiler alert) the death of Electra, the ninja organization known as the Hand, and a pit in Hell's Kitchen that is there because of Black Sky.

Yes, there was a lot going on, and part of it was establishing the Punisher as a character who could easily have his own series.  In fact, Ubergizmo has reported that fans are petitioning that he could get a TV series, and who knows, perhaps he could make an appearance on The Defenders.  In fact, since it has been established that Kingpin is active, it is possible that The Punisher could try and kill the Kingpin, like he has attempted to do so in the comics.

Part of what could shape The Defenders is events from Captain America: Civil War, which is planned to shape the Marvel universe.  With Captain America fighting Iron Man, it looks like the whole American public in the Marvel world might not like the idea of any superheroes.  This next Captain America film will start Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and could lead into a darker era for the films, at least until Phase 4 of the Infinity war begins, which could signal the biggest amount of superheroes on screen ever.

Fortunately, the Marvel Netflix Universe is set to be pretty dark.  So far, Daredevil and Jessica Jones have had very little direct crossover, as each of them have had entirely different sub-plots.  Jessica Jones did introduce Luke Cage, and he will be having his own series on September 30th.  After that, it will be time for Iron Fist, but there isn't any release date for that, and that goes for The Defenders as well as Jessica Jones, Season 3.

CinemaBlend is saying that it doesn't see any sense in a Daredevil Season 3, and it looks like The Defenders could change that.  It really all depends on what the long-range plan for the Netflix branch of the Marvel Cinematic universe is.
