If you think that we have a lot of superhero movies now, just wait until we have antihero superhero movies that will begin in 2016. It already has had a good start as Daredevil and Jessica Jones premiered on Netflix in 2015, but spring 2016 will feature Batman v. Superman, and then Captain America will fight Iron Man in the summer with Civil War. Kicking off the year of antihero superheroes will be Deadpool, and he has arrived in the form of two new trailers for the holidays.
According to iO9, these two trailers are actually one. One is the red band version, where they can show more R-rated stuff. In all honesty, I'm not certain if my editor will allow me to even embed the redband version on this site, but I'll include the non-red band version below. This is the Gospel Herald, after all.
Did you like that? I just broke the fourth wall. Deadpool is a Marvel character who is infamous for that, addressing the comic book reading audience directly in his psychopathic way. His first foray into the big screen was in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but it looks like the filmmakers are going to forget that ever happened. In that film, the Merc with a Mouth literally had his mouth taken away in a very lamentable fight scene. At the time, there were plans to make a solo Deadpool movie, but the fan reaction of Deadpool from the first solo Wolverine film (not to mention the film in general) was lackluster at best.
Fortunately, thanks to X-Men: Days of Future Present, the entire X-men universe got a complete reboot. Now Twentieth Century Fox is planning to give its viewers the Deadpool movie that is more like the one in the comics, with the fourth-wall breaking and all the violence. It is pretty clear from the trailer that this is a superhero film, but you should leave the kids at home as it is more of a revenge film.
It looks like Deadpool takes place in the X-Men universe, but there aren't really any public plans to put him in X-men Apocalypse. The presence of the Colossus on the trailer is proof of that, and it does seem like a missed opportunity.
The Deadpool film is directed by Tim Miller, a newcomer working from a script from Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. In addition to Reynolds as the titular character, there is a great supporting cast including Morena Baccarin as Vanessa Carlyse/Copycat, Gian Carano as Angel Dust, T.J. Miller as Weasel, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, and Andre Tricoteux as Piotr Rasputin/Colossus.
The Deadpool movie will appear in theaters on February 12, 2016.
