Pastor Rick Warren of Saddleback Church has created a cookbook to go along with his lifestyle program, "The Daniel Plan: 40 Days to a Healthier Life," which emphasizes eating natural foods along with fitness, brain health, faith, and friends.

"The Daniel Plan: 40 Days to a Healthier Life" has been the New York Times Best Sellers list for eight weeks. Its accompanying cookbook, "The Daniel Plan Cookbook: Healthy Eating for Life," features more than 100 recipes that fit The Daniel Plan lifestyle. It was created by Pastor Rick Warren, family physician and New York Times bestselling author Dr. Hyman, and Dr. Amen, a Psychiatrist proficient in brain imaging science. Dr. Hyman says they began with recipes that most people like to eat and varied the ingredients to fit The Daniel Plan lifestyle. The cookbook gives helpful tips on finding healthy snacks and also on how to plan menus.

"'The Daniel Plan' isn't about deprivation, but rather abundance ... Not only will these Daniel Plan recipes taste great, but they will also help you optimize your brain health, renew your mind, increase your focus, and live with a purpose-driven mind-set," says Dr. Amen.

A "good foods" list, which includes both super-food and brain food recommendations from doctors Hyman and Amen, can be found on The Daniel Plan website. It is recommended that a meal should consist of 50% non-starchy vegetables (i.e. broccoli, lettuce, spinach), 25% clean animal or vegetable proteins, and 25% whole grains or starchy vegetables (i.e. potatoes). ALR reports that recipes in the cookbook will include appetizers, snacks, and desserts, as well as breakfast items and tasty meals like BBQ chicken pizza and baked chicken parmesan - American classics which "don't compromise taste ... will help you live healthier, and give you energy to fulfill your God-given purpose," Warren says.

The cookbook can be ordered through The Daniel Plan website for $17.99. Its product description reads, "No chalky boring drinks or bland entrees here. Get ready to enjoy appetizing, inviting, clean, simple meals to enjoy and share in community with your friends and family."
