The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has released its nominations in the best of film and television from 2014.
According to the nomination list on their website, the films "Birdman," "Boyhood" and "The Imitation Game" secured multiple Golden Globe nominations in major categories, which have solidified their front-runner status for the awards. "Birdman" led the pack with seven nominations, while "Boyhood" and "The Imitation Game" received five nominations each.
For the biggest Golden Globe prize, Best Motion Picture, Drama, the five nominees included "Selma," "Boyhood," "Foxcatcher," "The Imitation Game," and "The Theory of Everything."
In regards to the Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy, the five nominees were Michael Keaton's "Birdman," Disney's "Into the Woods," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," Bill Murray's "St. Vincent" and British comedy "Pride."
However, there were some films that Globe voters snubbed altogether. According to Brooks Barnes and Michael Cieply of the New York Times, prominent films such as "Interstellar" and "Unbroken" were given scant or no recognition.
"'Unbroken,' directed by Angelina Jolie, got nothing," Barnes and Cieply wrote. "Ms. Jolie may have diminished her prospects by delivering the film late, as she worked with her husband, Brad Pitt, on another film in Malta."
Commercial hits have occasionally received the attention of Globe voters. They gave Ben Affleck's "Gone Girl" four Globe nominations, while Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar" was solely nominated for best score and "Wild" received a single nomination for its actress, Resse Witherspoon.
Based on the list released by the Hollywood Foreign Press, it seemed that they loved Julianne Moore. She was nominated twice for best actress, first in the drama "Still Alice" and a dark comedy entitled "Maps to the Stars."
"Globe voters clearly love her, as they do not lightly give up a seat that might have added yet another mass-appeal starlet - say, Ms. Jolie or Cameron Diaz or Kristin Wiig, all of whom had films in contention - to the festivities in January," Barnes and Cieply wrote.
In another nomination surprise, Globe voters recognized Jennifer Aniston's scar-faced performance in the obscure film "Cake," making her an Oscar contender according to the New York Times.
As for the world of television, HBO and Netflix shows dominated the Golden Globe picks. HBO shows like "True Detective," "Game of Thrones," "Girls," and "Silicon Valley" received nominations, while Netflix productions "House of Cards" and "Orange Is The New Black" also received recognition.
The Golden Globes will be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler and air Jan. 11, 2015, on NBC. The Hollywood Foreign Press, which organizes the event, is a collection of 85 mostly freelance journalists according to the New York Times.
