Google Play just announced its top five movies of 2016. It is not what you have expected. The Star Wars: The Force Awakens reigned as far as box office gross is concerned and joined the exclusive $2 billion club. However, Deadpool managed to top Google Play's list that include other commercially successful films.

Deadpool ended up as the most popular movie of 2016 on Google Play. The 20th Century Fox movie based on the character in Marvel Comics had a worldwide box office gross of $782.6 million in a budget of $58 million. Deadpool's commercial success defied its R-rating. According to Cinema Blend, it has become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time. It seemed like the film's popularity translated into Google Play. Ryan Reynolds played the antihero while Academy Award-nominated Tim Miller directed the movie adaptation of Wade Wilson's journey.

The second in the list is the hugely successful Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The first installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy broke box office records. To top it all up, The Force Awakens has joined the elusive club of movies with more than $2 billion worldwide gross. If it's not adjusted for inflation, the movie is currently the third highest-grossing film of all time behind Avatar with $2.7 billion and Titanic with $2.1 billion, according to Box Office Mojo. Harrison Ford leads the stellar cast with J. J. Abrams directing and co-producing the film. Though The Force Awakens was released back in 2015. The critically acclaimed movie also received five Academy Awards nominations.

It was followed by Disney's 3D-animated film Zootopia, the 25th highest-grossing film of all time without inflation as well as the third-highest grossing movie of 2016. The movie was praised for addressing discriminations and stereotypes. Zootopia was able to cross the $1 billion mark.

The other movies in the list showcase the arch rivals Marvel and DC. The Captain America: Civil War took the fourth place while Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice completed the top five list. The Marvel offering was released back in May 2016 and had grossed $1.153 billion. On the other hand, DC's film was released few months earlier and has a worldwide box-office gross of $873.3 million.

Aside from topping the movies section of Google Play, the Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe comic book beats out J.K. Rowlings' Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and other popular literary works like The Girl On A Train, The Art of War and Me Before You: A Novel.
