After the shocking attack on ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ fans are concerned that the Meredith Grey will continue to come across tragedies, some of which are outright unbelievable. Despite the unfortunate incident, Ellen Pompeo recently opened up about her character’s storyline and why she remains open to doing scenes that could discourage fans from following the series.

In an interview with Grey’s Anatomy executive producer Betsy Beers on her podcast Shondaland Revealed, Pompeo had put forward an argument for the many times her character had come across terrible circumstances.

"You don't think you're going to have to come up with 12 years of devastating things happening to one character," she said. "However, I look at the news every day and read newspapers online, and people have had some pretty unfortunate series of events happen to them in life. Things that you never think would happen. People being at two different mass shootings. Random, weird things do happen. Earth is quite an interesting place. So we can always suspend our disbelief enough to be able to tell some story and learn some lessons."

The 46-year-old actress also admitted that she does think twice about allowing new bouts of damage for Meredith but eventually acknowledges showrunner Shonda Rhimes’ ability to turn unlucky events into an advantageous incident.

"The first thing when Debbie [Allen, directing producer] told me they were planning this episode, I said, ‘So Meredith is going to be attacked again? Do you think the audience is going to go for that? Are they going to be able to handle that? Hasn't enough happened to Meredith?',” Pompeo recalled.

“And she said, ‘It's gonna be great. It's gonna be great. It's gonna be great,'" she added. "And, as always—listen, if Shonda thinks something's a good idea, it's usually a good idea."

Meanwhile, in another interview, Pompeo revealed that her character will experience therapy and go back to dating in the upcoming episodes, both of which have been discussed with Rhimes.

"We're moving toward Meredith dating again, so everyone has to get ready for it. I can tell you that I've shot a few scenes, although I don't know where they're going to go, but I have shot a few scenes, and I'm very happy and excited with the way this is unfolding," the actress shared. "It's exciting for Meredith, and it's some happiness, some light. I hope we get to keep going to down that path."

Fans have been speculating that Alex, played by Justin Chambers, could be Meredith’s new man after going the extra mile in treating Meredith right during the entire experience. With Alex’s relationship with Jo, played by Camilla Luddington, being in a very unstable state, it is being rumored that his friendly bond with Meredith could turn into romance.

As for the other relations of Pompeo’s character in the ABC series, actor James Pickens, Jr., who takes on the role of Dr. Weber, explained that Meredith’s accident will bring the surgeons together to be thankful for “how much of a family Seattle Grace really is.”

The experience will also encourage the doctors to put aside their differences in order to “come together for the common good, which, in this case, it’s saving her life basically,” the actor added.

‘Grey's Anatomy’ season 12 airs every Thursday at 8 p.m. on ABC.
