Hong Kong Christian Artists Celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival with Seniors

By Luke Leung

On Sept. 8, the staffs of Media Evangelism and Christian musicians Zac Kao, Stephen Au, and Phyllis Man barged into the St. James Settlement to play moon cake cutting games, sing gospel songs in Cantonese, shared testimonies of faith, and present the seniors with “Angel’s Heart Moon Cake” gift boxes; their hope is to see that the seniors can receive the love of Christ during this period before mid-autumn festival.

Singing songs titled The Love of True God, Between Gain and Loss, and Song of Salvation, Au felt inspired to sing Cantonese gospel songs for the first time, and that it is a lot more meaningful than singing just Cantonese songs. It was also the first time for some of the seniors to hear Cantonese gospel songs. Mixing the old-school melodies with the gospel lyrics, the Christian singers brought entertainment and newness to the seniors.

Au shared that he used to participate in charity activities mostly with promotional motivations. For this time around, he felt particularly meaningful because on one hand he was able to serve God along side with her wife, Phyllis, and on the other hand share with the seniors his joy and peace from knowing the gospel. His wife shared that it is also the first time that she was able to serve along side with Au and the first time that she sang Cantonese gospel songs with him publically; Man used to feel uncomfortable partnering with her husband, but her attitude changed. To be able to serve God with her husband gives her a sense of unity. Mid-autumn festival is a day when families come together. She hopes that everyone can treasure this time of gathering and to express their love to the family.

Kao joined the seniors in the game of passing lanterns. Those seniors that were slow in the game had to play the game of cutting moon cakes, where they needed to cut them into the shape of “Angel’s Heart Moon Cake.” Sharing with the seniors how God changed his joyless heart. Kao said that since he was little he grew up in love, but never felt joy. He used to depend on silly behaviors to satisfy him; until he got to college, God once again knocked on the door to his heart, and he invited Jesus to live in him. That was when he received the peace, joy, and satisfaction from God that urged him to share this same joy to others; therefore, he started to participate in evangelistic events, hoping that his testimonies can touch many more to turn to God. Seeing the seniors during this visitation, he said that he was very joyful and he hopes to share his love with them. Kao’s testimony touched the seniors. While a pastor concluded by singing the song “Joyful Old Men”, praying, and doing the altar call, numerous seniors decided to place their faith in the Lord and devote their lives to God.

Before the meeting concluded, the staff of Media Evangelism and the three Christian artists together wished the seniors a happy mid-autumn festival and distributed “Angel’s Heart Moon Cake” gift boxes to them. Upon receiving the gift boxes, the seniors were overjoyed and they raised their gifts as they took pictures with the celebrities. Some seniors even requested the artists to sign autographs on the gift boxes for memory’s sake.
