Jamal Roberts, a high school physical education teacher from Mississippi and father of three, has been named the winner of American Idol season 23. Known for his deep gospel roots and emotional performances, Roberts captured the hearts of audiences across the country with his authenticity and vocal talent.
According to CP (Christian Post), Roberts began singing in church at the age of two and later became a worship leader in his local congregation. He credits his faith and upbringing for shaping both his music and his purpose. “My voice has always been about worship, not performance,” he said.
Balancing life as a teacher, husband, and father, Roberts maintained his passion for music through late-night practice sessions and church involvement. His performances on American Idol often reflected a blend of gospel, soul, and Southern R&B, earning praise from the judges. According to CP, one judge remarked that his voice “sounds like the church,” highlighting its spiritual and emotional depth.
After being crowned the winner, Roberts gave credit to his faith community and family for their constant support, stating that his journey was never walked alone. Looking ahead, he hopes to continue making music that uplifts and reflects the message of hope that shaped his life.
