“House of Cards” actress Robin Wright has shared her sentiments over her experience in terms of gender pay gap. Wight is known for playing the First Lady Claire Underwood on the hit political drama while actor Kevin Spacey takes on the show’s President of the United States.
The actress recalled how she was previously told that she would be earning the same as her co-star Spacey, but has learned that this was not true. “I was told that I was getting equal pay [to Spacey] and I believed them, and I found out recently that it’s not true… So that’s something to investigate,” the 51-year-old star spoke to Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson for The Edit, as noted by NME.
Wright also compared her character with Spacey’s, emphasizing that they share the same power given that they are the presidential couple. “Claire and Francis are equivalent as far as their power, their union and the plot. I may not have as many scenes or words as Francis, but Claire doesn’t need to verbalize as much,” she said, while adding: “Claire is an [ego] that sits in the back and directs him, but they are partners on the same plane.”
Robin Wright is set to make an appearance in “Wonder Woman” and “Blade Runner 2049.” However, she said she might say goodbye to acting to pursue her goals in producing.
“I only want to direct,” she said. “I don’t want to be in front of the camera anymore. I’ve done it, I’m bored. I so appreciate [this career].
According to the actress, her three decades of acting experiences makes her want to just watch and help out other actors to bring their potential to great heights, including her own family members.
“I was working with my daughter last night because she has an audition for a TV show,” the Dallas native, who was married to actor Sean Penn for 14 years, shared. “We were running lines and I was giving her some directions, and I saw her take the direction and the [next] take was so good.”
When it comes to plot details for the new installment, the “House of Cards” season 5 trailer has already been dropped, showing audiences a darker plot. Frank Underwood is featured in the clip as he puts down American citizens, referring to them as “children.”
“We have to hold their sticky fingers and wipe their filthy mouths,” he says in the clip, highlighting his potential to turn his presidency into a dictatorship. He also strongly suggests that, upon winning the presidency, he will not give up his plans.
Claire is also featured in the “House of Cards” season 5 trailer as she wears a gas mask, becoming a warning of what the U.S. may come to face when the Underwoods begin their reign. While Frank remains determined, he could still encounter major trouble as he is shown in the clip lying unconscious on the floor while an unidentified female walks around him.
"One Nation. Underwood,” the trailer concludes in suspense.
Actor Michael Kelly, who takes on the role of Doug Stamper, revealed that “House of Cards” season 5 will be the end for certain characters. "You lose characters that you love. We almost lost Frank, and I always have faith in the writers that no matter what road we go down, we’re going to come back to what the show is,” he said to Deadline.
New cast members have reportedly joined the series, including Oscar nominee Patricia Clarkson and Campbell Scott. “House Of Cards” season 5 will be made available starting May 30 on Netflix. The trailer can be viewed below.
