Michael Kelly, who plays chief of staff Doug Stamper in "House of Cards" recently talked about the story arc of his character and what's in store for him in the upcoming seasons. According to Kelly, Stamper's impressive loyalty to Kevin Spacey's Frank Underwood is almost like an addiction.

Fans of the show know that aside from being Underwood's confidant, Stamper is also a conniving character that's capable of acting on his own and hatching his own schemes. Most of the time, his actions are driven by his undying loyalty to Underwood.

From a viewer's standpoint, Stamper comes off as a bit of an anti-hero because like Underwood, his dark nature is what makes him even more likeable. This is why Season 2 drew a huge reaction from fans because they thought Kelly's character had been killed off after he was left for dead after being bashed in the head by Rachel Posner, played by Rachel Brosnahan.

Despite suffering from a life-threatening injury, Stamper still soldiered on to help Underwood get to where he is today.

"Doug is so much based on addiction," Kelly said according to Indie Wire. "From alcohol to Rachel to Frank, it's something he has to have: tunnel vision. His loyalty to Frank is a byproduct of his loyalty to his job."

"When he failed, he saw another life he could have with his family and his brother, with a job that would take him elsewhere and Hawaii, to an easier life," he added. "He could do it, but it didn't make him tick."

But now that Stamper is back to his normal self, Kelly noted that fans can expect Stamper and Underwood to be in more scenes together in the upcoming episodes.

"It was nice to work as Doug in sweat pants and a t-shirt [rather than Stamper's traditional suit and tie] for a year," he told the Telegraph. "But part of me missed being with Kevin. We went from two or three scenes a day to four scenes over a season."

The fourth season of "House of Cards" was released on Netflix earlier this month. It fifth season is expected to come out in 2017.
