Kevin Spacey, star of the political drama series "House of Cards," recently appeared on the "Late Show with Stephen Colbert" and discussed the various details of the show. One of the interesting topics that he shared is how the series reflects reality.
Of course, many viewers would probably think that the reason why "House of Cards" is so realistic is because its writers base the plotlines on actual events. But according to Spacey, who plays the diabolical Frank Underwood, it's actually the other way around.
The fourth season of the series mainly centered on how Underwood's party is preparing for the elections, which is very similar to what is happening now in the U.S. Although one can probably consider that as a coincidence, Spacey said that the show has managed to predict what will happen in real events in each season of the series.
"By the way, this has happened every season," he said during the show. "We have writer, we have discussed the story lines, where we want to go, the arc of the show, we write it, we film it and then just before it airs, something that we have done happens in real life. In every season this has happened."
"And we think people are going to assume we ripped it from the headlines, right? But in fact, it's been the other way around," Spacey added.
The actor then noted that he wants to test the theory about the show predicting actual events by incorporating a particular plotline in the fifth season of the series. Specifically, this involves including in the script that a budget of $965 billion be allocated for the National Endowment for the Arts, which is a government agency which grants financial support to certain artistic projects.
"Let's see if we can make it happen," he said. "It's an awesome idea."
The fifth season of "House of Cards" does not yet have an official release date. However, since Netflix released the fourth season in March, viewers can expect to see the next installment during the same month next year. As previously noted by Spacey, even though the show's creator Beau Willimon has left the series, it is still being handled by the same team of writers, which means "House of Cards" will still carry the same level of quality as seen in past seasons.
