Interview with Spurs Guard Danny Green's Father: Son's NBA Finals Performance and Christian Faith

In an interview with The Gospel Herald, Danny Green Sr., the father of San Antonio Spurs shooting guard Danny Green Jr., spoke of his thoughts on his son's outstanding performance so far in the 2014 NBA Finals against the Miami Heat.

As a practicing Christian, Green Sr. also shared how his faith has helped him weather the storms in life and get through the valleys, and how his son's faith has kept him grounded and humble despite the NBA star and celebrity status.

He said his eldest son's siblings look up to him as a positive role model. Meanwhile, he also shared that he has recently given birth to a new-born baby daughter on June 5, 2014, which fell on the same day as his son's outstanding fourth quarter performance in Game 1 that boosted the Spurs to a 1-0 lead to open the NBA Finals 2014.

Meanwhile, Danny Green Sr. and his family also head a summer basketball camp that boasts of roughly 350 participants. Information for registration can be found online at www.teamgreenba.com.

Here is an excerpt of the interview:

Your son Danny has an outstanding game in his second NBA Finals. Your feeling about that?

Some of our fellows invited us to a restaurant, and all the spurs fans were at one table, and we had this long table, and right next to us was a table of Miami Fans. So every time the Miami scored, they are cheering, and every time the Spurs scored, we're going back and forth.

Danny had his first three quarters (game 1), I thought he played an excellent game overall, but he didn't really hit any shots until the fourth quarter. As usual, when Danny comes and hits the shot, usually one becomes seven really quickly, and he went on an 11-2 run by himself. And the whole restaurant just erupted, and I was excited and elated for Danny.

Tell us about your faith in God and how has it affected your life?

When things are not going well in their life, people tend to waiver in their faith, but I believe that the deeper you get into the word, the deeper your faith is, it kind of brings you through those tough times, because life is peace and valley. When you are at the peak, that's when everything is good, but when you are at the valley, that's when your faith has to be the strongest.

For me, that's helped me get over those speed bumps in life.

How about Danny? Is his faith similar to yours?

Yes, Danny's faith has kept him grounded and humble as a human being. Even though he's an NBA player and celebrity, he's still the same person as when he was ten year old boy. He's still the same guy, and very humble. He is just a regular person. I think his faith keeps him grounded that way.
