Jackie Chan's Son Jaycee Arrested on Drug Charge

Jackie Chan's son Jaycee has been sentenced to six months in jail after pleading guilty in a Beijing court to "sheltering others to take drugs" and was fined $322.

"I violated the law. I deserve to be punished. When I return to the society, I won't do it again," Chan said, in a courtroom footage aired on state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV). Over 100 people from the press covered the high-profile case.

Police raided Jaycee Chan's Beijing home, where they found more than 100 grams of marijuana. Chan and Taiwanese movie star Ko Kai (Ko Chen-tung) were arrested and the two tested positive for the illegal drug.

Chan's arrest and trial has been particularly embarrassing for his Hong Kong movie star father Jackie Chan, who was named "Narcotics Control Ambassador" by Chinese police in 2009.

According to The Guardian, police arrested last summer more than 7,800 people in Beijing over illegal drug use, and Chan's arrest climaxed in what was described as the biggest crackdown in two decades.

China's official news agency Xinhua reports that the maximum sentence for the charge against Chan was three years in prison.

Jackie Chan has said he was "ashamed" of his son's actions. While he sits on China's top national political advisory panel, he told Xinhua that he did not use his connections to interfere with the case. He hopes that his son will eventually become an anti-drug ambassador.

CCTV reported that Chan told police that he has been using drugs for eight years and has provided a place for drug use for four times.

On the other hand, Ko has been released after a 14-day administrative detention for drug use.
