Microsoft Lumia intends to give consumers a Windows phone experience with some of their latest phones such as the 640, 640 XL, 940, and 940 XL. These will be some of the first phones to have Windows 10, which means there is quite a lot of anticipation built around them. However, this could lead to some late release dates for all models.
When last time we reported on the 640 and the 640 XL, we were talking about the odd delay in these two phones, and sadly, there still has not been any update on a proper release date. There is also no reason to be found on why this has occurred as most sources stated a few months ago that the 640 and 640 XL would be available in April.
The Lumia 640 and its bigger sister, the 640 XL, were first unveiled at Mobile World Congress (MWC). The 640 has a 5 inch screen while the 640 XL has a 5.7 inch screen. Both of these phones will begin with Windows 8.1,which means that you can upgrade them to Windows 10 soon. With these phones comes a year's subscription to Office 365, as well as 1 TB of OneDrive storage plus access to Office on a PC, Mac, or Tablet. Also included is 60 free minutes of Skype Unlimited worldwide per month.
Other features that both phones have include a quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor at 1.2 GHz, 1 GB of RAM, 8GB storage, microSIM slot, microSD card slot of up to 128 GB, Bluetooth 4.0, and NFC. The specs of the cameras are different as the 640 has an 8.0 Megapixel main camera (0.9 Megapixel front-facing camera) while the 640 XL has a 13 Megapixel camera (5.0 Megapixel front-facing camera).
As far as the Lumia 940 and 940 XL are concerned, these could be the first Windows phones to run Windows 10, according to PC Advisor. This does mean that the smartphones will have a later release date, as the actual release date of Windows 10 is pretty vague with "Sometime in July 2015". This would meant that the 940 and 940 XL should have a July/August release date.
As far as the specs of the 940 and 940 XL are concerned, here is what we know. The 940 will have a 5.2 inch display, with the 940 XL having a 5.7 inch display, but some sources state it will only be 5 inches. It will also have a 2.7 GHz Snapdragon 805 , processor, Adreno 420 graphics, 3 GB of RAM, with options for 32, 64, or 128 GB of storage. The rear-facing camera should be a 24 Megapixel PureView camera with LED flash, with 4K video recording at 60 fps (Frames Per Second). The front-facing camera will be at 5 Megapixels, and capable of 1080p video. In addition to those features, Ecumenical News reports that the 940 and 940 XL will have advanced features like 3D-Interaction, Iris Scanner, and pen support.
The delay of these phones to the market might be a good thing as Microsoft really wants to get its act together as far as Windows 10 is concerned. Once Windows 10 has been released, these 640, 640 XL, 940, and 940 XL phones can be optimized for it. It will be interesting to see if they change the smartphone landscape, currently dominated by the iPhone and Android.
