Mortal Kombat X promises to bring back the fighting action that made the franchise so popular since the early nineties. The game promises a lot of downloadable content (DLC) action, and here is what has been released as far as DLC release dates and characters.
According to Attack of the Fanboy, a certain user on the Mortal Kombat forum received an email from EB Games Australia with the release dates for the DLC packs for Mortal Kombat X. It is possible that the release dates might be Australian date, but since this is digital content, it is quite possible for them to be released at the same time all around the world.
The first DLC is the MASKDMURDER Pack, coming on April 26th. This strange capitalized abbreviation of "Masked Murder" is meant to show that the first DLC Character for Mortal Kombat X will be famed masked murderer Jason Voorhees, the slasher who wore a hockey mask in most of the Friday the 13th films.
On May 1st will be the unveiling of the Klassic Pack #1, and this will feature Tremor, a brown garbed ninja and member of the Black Dragon clan who made his debut in Mortal Kombat: Special Forces, according to the Mortal Kombat Wikia.
May 24th will be the day where users can get the DLC pack HUNTERPREY, which will allow players to play as the Predator from the popular movie series. Not only will fans get to play as the famous hunting alien, but there will be a skin on the pack with Carl Weathers as Jax.
The last DLC for Mortal Kombat X is Klassic Pack #2, which will include Tanya, who first appeared in Mortal Kombat 4.
To make things even more interesting, Mortal Kombat X will have a Challenge Towers mode. These "living towers" that will appear every time the game is turned on, with one changing every hour, one changing every day, and the last being the Premier Tower which is an event tower. According to VG 24/7, players can try out DLC characters even if they don't own them.
According to IGN.com, Mortal Kombat X will be "fueled by next-gen technology", that "combines unparalled, cinematic presentation with dynamic gameplay to create an unprecedented Kombat experience". Players can choose from multiple variations of each character for the first time ever, which will impact both strategy and fighting style.
Fans have a lot to look forward to as four-armed Shokan fighter Goro will make his return, according to Game Rant. This character appeared in the last incarnation of Mortal Kombat, often known as Mortal Kombat 9. Goro was merely a sub-boss for that one, but now he will be a playable character. If you want to play Goro, you will need to pre-order the game prior to its launch, or have to wait until he becomes available as a paid DLC. Perhaps he will be included in one of the Klassic Packs.
It is not known if Goro will be the only DLC character, but the game director Ed Boon has talked about the return of guest characters, so why not more? Of course, Mortal Kombat 9 featured Freddy Krueger as a playable character, which seems an odd mix of this video game franchise and the horror movie franchise Nightmare on Elm Street. However, with Jason and the Predator appearing in Mortal Kombat X, fans are anxious to see what movie slasher is next.
Boon has also stated that Mortal Kombat X will have the largest roster in the series' history, and this includes Sub Zero, Raiden, and newcomers like Johnny Cage's daughter, Cassie. The Latin Post has reported that Cassie Cage looks very similar to UFC fighter Felice Herrig. Herrig has even posted on Instagram a picture of her with Cassie Cage side-by-side, and claimed that Mortal Kombat X used her likeness. It doesn't look like Herrig minds this.
Mortal Kombat first hit arcades back in 1992 as a fighting game that featured graphics that looked very realistic at the time. The game then hit the consoles, and it became very controversial as it featured "Finishing Moves" that were extremely graphic, and the Mortal Kombat series aroused concerned parents groups that eventually led to today's Game rating system. Mortal Kombat X is currently rated M for Mature, and the trailer for the game looks extremely violent.
Mortal Kombat X, or MKX, will be released to the Sony PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on April 14, 2015. The Xbox 360 and PS3 should come out shortly thereafter, along with a mobile port. It should be rated M, but don't be surprised if a rated A version comes about.
