Today is Nelson Mandela International Day, a day of service celebrated on July 18. This is the first time the day has been celebrated since the South Africa's anti-apartheid icon's death last year. Friday would have been Mandela's 96th birthday.

Here are some of the most famous quotes from Nelson Mandela:

1. “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”

2. "It always seems impossible until it's done."

3. “And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
