After turning himself in to authorities, former Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel has been scheduled to appear in court on today to face the domestic abuse charges made against him. The case stems from the violence allegations made by his former girlfriend Colleen Crowley.

According to CNN, Manziel surrendered to law enforcers in Texas on Wednesday. They then booked him for misdemeanor assault charges. He was then released after posting bond for $1,500.

As reported by the news site, the case against Manziel was made due to an alleged altercation between him and Crowley on Jan. 29 of this year. According to Crowley, she and Manziel were staying at a hotel in Dallas when the incident occurred. She alleged that the former quarterback threatened and restrained her and even hit her on the head. She noted that the blow she received affected her hearing.

Manziel has already denied hitting Crowley and his lawyer, Jim Darnell believes that his client will be acquitted in the court hearing. But, if found guilty, the athlete could face a jail time of up to a year and a fine of $4,000, according to ESPN.

This is not the first time that Manziel got in trouble with the law. In 2012, shortly after becoming the starting quarterback for Texas A&M, he was arrested and charged with three misdemeanors including disorderly conduct.

He also dealt with alcohol addiction during the course of his NFL career.

Ryan Leaf, the former NFL quarterback who also had substance abuse problems in the past, offered his insight on Manziel's current situation. According to the athlete, who previously spent time in prison, the best thing Manziel can do right now is to take control of his life by getting help.

"Quite honestly, one of the things I talked to him about from day 1...was to get back to getting help, so that the reasons he was released by the Browns would be in the past and that he could move forward with his life as a positive member of society and take advantage of all the gifts that he has," he said according to Bleacher Report.

"The world can be his," Leaf added. "But obviously, in many respects he needs guidance right now, he needs help, and needs to gain control of his life again."
