For a while now, the Cleveland Browns have been back and forth in their starting quarterback due to the injuries of Josh McCown and Cody Kessler. But earlier this week, the team confirmed that Kessler will return to his starting post and will most likely hold on to this position even after the 2017 draft pick.

The Browns, who are currently hanging on to a winless record, started encountering quarterback troubles at Week 1 after starter Robert Griffin III suffered a serious shoulder injury. This then opened an opportunity for McCown to start in Week 2.

However, this was short-lived after he suffered an injury during that game. He returned on Oct. 30 but during his absence, the Browns appointed Kessler has his replacement.

Kessler, on the other hand, has recently returned from his injury and is expected to start in the upcoming game against the Baltimore Ravens at Week 7, according to Ian Rapoport.

As noted by the insider, Kessler's return to the position will serve as his audition in order to show that he has what it takes to stay on the post. If he succeeds, he will be the team's starting quarterback until the 2017 season.

Apparently, the Browns have decided to stick with Kessler after learning that next year's potential quarterback picks are not that strong.

So, instead of gambling and picking a new quarterback, the team will reportedly focus on rookies who will be able to help out Kessler and the team's offense. In other words, the Browns will most likely be on the lookout for talented wide receivers next year.

With Kessler's starting job seemingly secure, this means the Browns will have a surplus of backup quarterbacks next year. In order to free up enough cap room for next year, or to gain favorable draft spots, the team will most likely part ways with one or two of its quarterbacks.

The Browns could either release or trade away McCown, Kevin Hogan or Joe Callahan. Depending on Griffin's condition after he recovers from his injury, he could be included in the team's trading list.
