NFL Rumors: Washington Redskins Release Robert Griffin III, Dallas Cowboys Want NFL Star as Potential Tony Romo Sub

Washington Redskins Robert Griffin III calls himself the "best quarterback" in the NFL.

The career of Robert Griffin III in the Washington Redskins has been marked with numerous ups and downs. Starting out as one of the most promising rookies in the NFL, RG3 was immediately drafted by the Washington Redskins in the hopes of using his skills to bolster the team's chances of bagging the Super Bowl. While the Washington Redskins got their money's worth with the acquisition of RG3, it appears that the years of wear and tear are already taking a toll on the NFL star's body - a concern that might shove him in the trading block soon.

Although the Washington Redskins and the reps of Robert Griffin III have yet to provide clarifications on the rumors regarding the NFL star's departure from the team, fans and followers of the quarterback noted that the changes in the roster might be indicative of his future. One particularly telling move, according to sports analysts and loyal fans of the Washington Redskins, is the decision of the NFL team to bench Robert Griffin III and opt for Kirk Cousins as the starting quarterback.

This move was confirmed by Jay Gruden himself, the head coach of the Washington Redskins, when he declared that the NFL group is "Kirk's team" now. This decision will take effect on the game of the Washington Redskins against the Miami Dolphins for Week 1 of the 2015 NFL regular season on September 13.

"I can't say enough about the class act Robert [Griffin] has been from the day I was drafted to now," stated Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins, referring to his gratefulness over the opportunity to become the starting player, according to ESPN. He went on to say, "The way he has treated me, the way he has handled a lot of adversity - I have marveled at his ability as a rookie to never flinch, to compete as a young player in this league and win rookie of the year and taking our team to the playoffs and winning the division. I marveled at that. The way that he is a fierce competitor, I've always respected. He has always been a guy who remains classy, works very, very hard and I've learned from that example."

While this may seem an abrupt move for the Washington Redskins, the decision to choose Kirk Cousins over Robert Griffin III is actually quite reasonable. Throughout the 2015 NFL preseason games, the performance of Kirk Cousins had been more notable and brought more progress to the Washington Redskins than RG3. Sports analysts also pointed out that the drop-back offense that Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden favors appears to be more suited for the playing style of Kirk Cousins.

Should the Washington Redskins choose to let go of RG3, the Philadelphia Eagles may be a suitable NFL team for the star. With head coach Chip Kelly favoring the type of quarterbacks like Tim Tebow, who can both lead and run the field, the playing style of Robert Griffin III may help him fit right in. Another potential NFL team to take in the star is the Dallas Cowboys who have been actively seeking players to possibly serve as the next Tony Romo. At the moment though, the only confirmed news with regard the future of Robert Griffin III in the Washington Redskins is that the NFL quarterback will be out throughout the first week of the regular season.
