God-fearing Washington Redskins' quarterback Robert Griffin III earned a touchdown with Christians without even playing in Sunday's NFL Wild-Card football game. He chose to leave a letter for his teammates, rather than to talk to reporters Monday, as his way of saying goodbye. Griffin's letter, quoting "The Paradoxical Commandments" written by Dr. Kent Keith in 1968, appeared underneath a framed verse from the Bible - Philippians 4:13: "I can do all this through him who gives me strength."
Heisman Trophy winner Griffin III, or RG3 as he was called, graduated from Baylor. Then the athlete appeared to be going to have a terrific career with the Redskins, perhaps becoming the football hero Washington had craved for decades. He even started a new Internet meme called "Griffining." However, back-to-back gruesome knee injuries in 2012, including a torn ACL injury, took his football feet right from under him and he's had to sit on the sidelines for far too long.
In an otherwise cleaned-out locker, Griffin, 25, chose to show his faith in God through everyday life, even in challenging circumstances. The motivational poster left in his locker read:
People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered. Love them anyway.
If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives. Do good anyway.
If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway.
The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.
Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable. Be honest and frank anyway.
The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds. Think big anyway.
People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs. Fight for a few underdogs anyway.
What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. Build anyway.
People really need help but may attack you if you do help them. Help people anyway.
Give the world the best you have and you'll get kicked in the teeth. Give the world the best you have anyway.
Robin Butler on social media posted: "Well said...and so true. Thank you and to you RG3. God bless you and keep on trusting and believing...keep on being YOU, the YOU that God created you to be...NOT MAN. Head up and trust God with everything and HE WILL NEVER FAIL YOU. Thank you simply for being you and being all you could be. Look to the hills for your help....your help comes from HIM."
