Rockstar is a company up there with Square Enix, as it has two major intellectual properties that can keep it in the black very well. The first is Grand Theft Auto (GTA), and GTA 5 has shown that the company can make one of the biggest games of all time. GTA 5 is about three years old and is due for another iteration in the next few years with GTA 6, which is being worked on. Another game that is overdue for an upgrade is Red Dead Redemption, released for the PS3 and Xbox 360 back in 2010. This is what is known about what Rockstar is doing with GTA 6 and Red Dead Redemption 2, as well as their possible release dates.
According to The Mirror, GTA 6 has at least been started, but the studio has yet to decide on a location. There have been a lot of rumors on that, some saying that it will be set in Tokyo, even though that type of move would require a complete rebuild of the road system.
Generally, all the GTA games take place in some kind of American-ized locale, except for the expansion for the original Grand Theft Auto taking place in London. There have also been rumors of moving the location to Las Vegas or even cities in South America, but it really is just a matter of all the work that has to be put into it just for something that is a little bit new for the fans.
It has also been reported that perhaps GTA 6 could take place in a different time, like it did in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. There have been other rumors about GTA 6, much of them involving some new driving tricks on the gameplay. One of them concerns voices used in the game, such as Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling could be a part of it, according to N4BB.
Many say that it will take years before GTA 6 comes to consoles, and by that time, the Xbox Two and PlayStation 5 will be out, so we're looking at 2018 or 2020. As for Red Dead Redemption 2, that really should be coming soon, as a recent leak of a map has surfaced, according to Ecumenical News.
This map is very large, showing that the sequel will have more open world to discover. Many are saying that the areas look similar to the game's first map, but since some of the areas look a bit more developed, the game could be a prequel. The original game took place when the Old West was kind of dying, but this map shows lands that are flourishing. There is even a place on the new map marked New Bordeaux, the fictional setting for Mafia 3, a game from Rockstar's partner Take Two Interactive.
Assuming that Red Dead Redemption 2 is in production, it is hopefully deep in production. Fans of the original game are hoping that there will be a formal announcement at the annual video game convention of E3 2016 in Los Angeles in June, and perhaps Red Dead Redemption 2 will be a holiday release game.
