You might be a millionaire and have adoring fans all over the world, but there are times in life which get under your skin. Susan Boyle is one such character. This larger than life person won the world over with her rendition of “I Dreamed A Dream” from the musical Les Miserables in 2009 on Britain’s Got Talent, and has since shot to superstardom with a few albums under her belt in addition to various musical tours on the entertainment circuit. This Scottish lass has had a tough time in the past before she became famous, which is why it is no surprise that she has admitted that her biggest fear is not stage fright or dying as a single lady, all alone in a home, but being unable to pay her outstanding bills.
Since her breakout audition eight years ago that showed the world just what a talent she is (and in some way, I am quite sure it also inspired the U.S. edition of The Voice by NBC that underlined the point of not judging a singer by his or her looks), Susan Boyle has definitely lived it up, earning a handsome amount of money stashed away in the bank to the tune of millions. However, such financial security has not managed to help her overcome whatever insecurity that she has carried with her. Moving more than 25 million records with an estimated personal fortune of £22 million, SuBo (as she is fondly referred to by the media) informed The Sunday Post that she continues to be a prudent spender for the one fact that she is scared of actually spending everything away in a flash.
The 56-year old singer shared, “My goals are simple now. To have good friends and family around me and enjoy some of the money I have earned within reason and ensure I never have to worry about paying my gas and electric again. I’ve been there, sitting in the dark, unable to pay the bills after my mother died and before I went on Britain’s Got Talent. My biggest fear is going back to that, which is why I strive to be sensible.”
It is often the deepest and darkest situations in our lives that will shape and mold us to the person who we are today. However, there are times when the old fears take a grip of our souls, and we start to wonder whether the house of cards around us is going to collapse with everything going in a downward spiral. It is safe to assume that SuBo is on solid ground, since she continues to reside in the former council house that is located in Blackburn, West Lothian, the very place where she grew up and took care of her mother until her demise. Of course, SuBo has splurged just a fraction of her fortune on a £300,000 five-bedroom villa that is located nearby, but like many of us, we continue to find a strange draw towards our childhood homes, with her self-proclaimed “posh house” being used primarily as a place to stash her nice things.
It is nice to see someone so human and grounded to the earth despite having plenty of worldly riches, without being out of touch with the everyday working class. Thankfully SuBo has managed to maintain this careful balance of fame and wealth with humility, without blowing it all away in frivolous living. This is very much unlike other cases of multi-millionaires who died while living as a homeless person, which is rather sad that such potential went unfulfilled. One thing is for sure, if SuBo continues to carry herself this way, being unable to pay her monthly bills would be the least of her worries.
