In 2004, Disney and Pixar released a superhero film known as The Incredibles, at a time when cinema only had Spider-Man and X-men franchise. Now, movies are filled with superhero films from Marvel and DC. Director Brad Bird said that he could only do a sequel if it had a better story than the original, and what he has come up with is slightly questionable. The concept behind The Incredibles 2 seems sound, as The Master Herald reports that the film takes place about six years after the first film. At that time, Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl's children, Violet and Dash, are in college, and their younger brother Jack-Jack is about six to seven years old.
This sounds like a good set-up, but reports state that the villain Syndrome will return and mentor Jack-Jack as he develops his powers. Then Syndrome will apparently take Jack-Jack on the course of evil. There are three things that might not work with this concept.
The first is that Syndrome is shown as dying in the first film. Granted, Syndrome's death strongly implied as his cape sucks him into a jet engine which blows up. Second, I don't think that Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl would be willing to allow Syndrome to mentor their son after everything that transpired in the first film. Third, there is something about this premise that feels...forced.
After all, the first film was not only a cool superhero action film, but it was a human story about a superhero in a mid-life crisis. Although it is dramatic to have Jack-Jack as the villain of the story, there isn't really much of a point to it. Unless Brad Bird is trying to emphasize how children often have conflict with their parents. Brad Bird is good for making human stories like The Iron Giant and Ratatouille work, but it didn't work so well with Tomorrowland.
Still, there is some promise to this film. Frozone, the ice-based hero who was portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson in the first film, will be back, and he will have a bigger role. There will also be the return of the Underminer, a villain who appeared at the end of the last film, voiced by repeat voiceover man John Ratzenberger.
The Incredibles 2 will be out in theaters on June 21, 2019. One subject that needs to be addressed is whether or not superheroes are now lawful in the world of The Incredibles. Those that saw the first film remember that the issue is that superheroes were in forced retirement, but the actions of the Parr family in the first film against Syndrome could have changed that. In other words, The Incredibles could begin in a world where superheroes are thriving like in Disney's own Marvel Universe. That might be interesting to see, as the superhero world really felt like it could be developed a little more.
