LG G6 is rumored to be ditching the modular concept of the commercially unsuccessful LG G5. The upcoming flagship phone of LG will likely cost a bit more than the G5.  LG?? via Flickr

The LG G5, with its dual camera that allows one to capture images with a wide angle, while sporting a modular form factor is definitely one of the best smartphones to be released last year. How has it held up so far until 2017? If you happen to be rocking to an unlocked LG G5 over in the US, here is some good news for you. The 2016 flagship device from LG will finally pick up the Android 7.0 Nougat update, where it will be accompanied by the April security update. Just in case you do not know whether you are using an unlocked LG G5 or not, it will carry the model number RS988. The entire update would weigh in at a massive 1.3GB, so you might want to make sure that your LG G5 is plugged into a power outlet or at the very least, has 50% of its battery life remaining. Apart from that, it would also be recommended to download the update via a reliable Wi-Fi network as opposed to using a huge chunk of your monthly data quota.

The Android 7.0 Nougat update for the unlocked LG G5 in the US would bring with it a slew of new features that will help you remain with the other newer devices in the market in terms of Android features for some time to come. After all, this would mean that the unlocked LG G5 will be up to par with its 2016 rivals and contemporaries -- the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge. Of course, this year’s flagship LG device, the LG G6, already arrives with Android 7.0 Nougat right out of the box, as with the other 2017 flagship Android-powered devices from Samsung and other manufacturers.

What’s new in Android 7.0 Nougat? For the uninitiated, Android 7.0 Nougat will arrive with a split screen mode, in addition to Doze improvements, among others. Quick app switching would definitely be more than welcome, considering how the LG G5 still packs a considerable amount of processing muscle to get the job done and with the ability to switch between apps in a jiffy, your productivity will be maximized while you are on the move. New emoji genders as well as skin tones will let you send more politically correct messages, whether it is with family or friends. If you feel pestered or pressured by app notifications, it is now a snap to make minute adjustments to these notifications based on the app itself, which is definitely another cool option to have.

Daydream has also seen a new purpose for its existence, where it is now known as Screen Saver and for obvious reasons. Of course, the aforementioned split screen window is always welcome, allowing you to run YouTube in the background while being productive with another app. However, the LG G5’s limited screen space does somewhat negate this feature to a degree, making it more useful on other devices with a far more generous visual real estate.

In order to make sure whether your unlocked LG G5 has already picked up the Android 7.0 Nougat update, just head over to Settings > General > About phone > Update centre > System update > Check for update. As usual, the standard precautions apply in this case. Make sure you perform a backup of all your data before you proceed, as you can never quite tell whether something might go awry during the installation process. While it is better late than never, the likes of AT&T have already issued the Android 7.0 Nougat update last month, making us wonder why LG had taken its own sweet time with an unlocked device.
