Motorola's Moto X was right on target to get the latest Android 5.0.2 Lollipop mobile operating system update this month, but a problem with the first generation Moto X's chipset caused an indefinite delay.

Speaking up about the issue on Twitter, Motorola Support answered a user question asking about a timeline for 5.0.2 by responding on February 9, "Moto X (1st Gen) will get L, but chipset requires more effort. We're working to deliver satisfactory experience, performance."

When probed for a bit more information, the company's support liaison answered that they don't have a timeline yet, but "all efforts are on it" and "We don't provide release dates, but we're working to roll out Lollipop to all eligible devices globally as quickly as possible," further promising that "any relevant info will be communicated in a timely manner."

The chipset that the company is talking about in the Moto X 2013 is a modified version of the 1.7 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 Pro from Qualcomm. It's modified in a way that allows Motorola's own X8 Mobile Computing System with eight total cores.

The manufacturer didn't mention the exact problems that it's facing with the chipset, but only that it's to blame for the delay.

The Moto X 2013 model also features 2 GB of RAM, 16, 32, or 64 GB of storage, a 10-megapixel rear camera with 1080p HD video capable of 30 frames per second, and all faced by a 4.7-inch 1280 x 720 AMOLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for protection.

The 2014 second-generation version of the Moto X, however, is already enjoying the 5.0 Lollipop update for Verizon and U.S Cellular customers in the U.S., as well as owners of the contract-less Pure Edition. The Pure Edition of the second-generation Moto X was one of the first to get the Lollipop update late last year.

The Moto X 2014 was released on September 5, 2014 and features a 2.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, 2 GB of RAM, 16, 32, or 64 GB of storage, a 13-megapixel rear camera, and a larger 5.2-inch Super AMOLED display running at 1920 x 1080 resolution. 

While the original Moto X was highly praised for its time, the second-generation model provided a much more quality experience for users. The Verge called the Moto X 2014 "the best Android smartphone ever made" and Engadget referred to it as "a thousand times better than last year's model."

In addition to both generations of the Moto X, Motorola has confirmed that it plans to roll out Android 5.0 Lollipop to both generations of the Moto G, the Moto G 4G LTE, the Droid Turbo, the Moto E, the Droid Ultra, the Droid Maxx, and the Droid Mini.
