Now that Google has announced last month that Android M (also known as version 6.0 or just Marshmallow) is in the process of rolling out, it is just a matter of when newer Android devices will be receiving it. Google's own Nexus series got it first, but what about other Android devices like those from Motorola? This is the Android 6.0 Marshmallow Upgrade Release Date information for Moto X 2014, 2015; Moto G3, G2; Moto 3rd & 2nd Gen Moto E Series for Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, or T-Mobile.
So far, no one at Motorola has given an official release date when it comes to when Android 6.0 will be arriving to the G series, X series, or other Android-powered devices. The issue when it comes to the Android rollout is that it will spill out to the newer devices first, but this is often a very slow trickledown. From there, it will go to the older devices, assuming that it will do some older devices at all. Even when it does get rolled out, it often depends on the carrier, such as Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, or T-Mobile.
There has been little news on the carrier front, but a list of Motorola phones to receive the upgrade to Android M include the following, according to Android Pit:
- Moto X Pure Edition
- Moto X Style
- Moto X Play
- Moto G (3rd gen)
- Moto X (2014)
- Moto G (2014)
- Moto G 4G LTE (2015)
- DROID Turbo
- Moto MAXX
- Moto Turbo
Note that this means that the prominent flagship phones from Motorola will be receiving it, which include those from the G Series and the X Series. You may notice that the E Series, even the 3rd and 2nd Gen versions of these devices, did not make this cut. Sadly, the highest this E series will go will be the Android 5.1.1 version, and no higher.
From what is known about the Marshmallow upgrade to Motorola phones, the Moto G3 and Moto G2 are going to receive Android 6.0 soon, according to Android Standard. It is possible that the G1 could be on this list, but not likely.
As far as the release date of these updates for the G series, it is expected to arrive on the 3rd Generation sometime in November and the 2nd Generation sometime in December. Moto G 2nd Gen Google Play editions should have the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update already.
As for the Moto X series, a report from Venture Capital Post states that the Moto X Pure Edition for 2015 is expect to be the first Motorola device to obtain the Android Marshmallow update, and it will arrive "soon". In fact, Motorola is currently testing Android version 6.0 for the Pure Edition 2015 in the form of soak tests. The Moto X2 Pure Edition and Moto X Style are also expected to be receiving their upgrade this month.
