Android users have been wanting to get their hands on the Lollipop update (Android version 5.0), and few of the devices actually are running it. Those that have the Moto G were reported to have received the Lollipop update quite early in November 2014, but this could be different depending on your carrier (Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, or AT&T).
The official Motorola blog has stated that they have started to roll out Lollipop in phases, a week after the public release of the software on the Moto G (2nd Gen.) US GSM as well as the 2nd generation Moto G Global GSM retail versions sold in the US. A report by Gotta Be Mobile on November 12th 2014 also stated that the Moto G update will be rolling out.
In fact, we have already reported that the second generation of the Moto G should have the Lollipop update. However, we wanted to follow up on that because this can vary depending on your subscriber, as we have recently written about the Motorola Moto X having a Lollipop update that is only available to Verizon subscribers and the second generation of the smartphone.
Most of the news about the Moto G 2nd generation seems to be saying that it is readily available, and it doesn't look like there is any stipulation about the subscriber (Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, or T-Mobile). Even Motorola's customer help website confirms the new software update to Moto G (2nd Generation), saying "this update brings AndroidTM 5.0 Lollipop to your phone along with other improvements".
However, I contacted the Motorola's help line today, and had an online conversation about the release of Lollipop on the second generation of the Moto G. They told me that they are releasing the updated "by batch", which means "they are releasing the update on the phone for a certain number only". About the best answer I got was "You can call the carriers if you want to confirm the release of the update". If you have the Moto G, second generation, and have not received your Lollipop update as yet, I would highly recommend calling your carrier and seeing if it actually really is available for you now.
As for owners of the first generation of the Moto G, it is very similar to the situation of Moto X users: you will have to wait. The good news is that you probably don't have to wait long. According to a recent posting on Droid-Life, an update to the Motorola Update Services has hit google Play for owners of the First generation of the Moto G, which shows an impending update to Lollipop. The changelog stated that the update "is necessary to enable a future upgrade of your device to Android 5.0 Lollipop".
